hi, I currently have a PC and an Android tablet. It was the cheapest on the market and I find I quite like the tablet but I'm frustrated by the lack of music apps - which I think is down to limitations in the OS.

So I'm contemplating an I Pad mini 2. I've seen stuff on line about using i-tunes to communicate betwen a PC and the I pad.

Anyone with experience of this? I'd need to be able to share audio files, MP3s, maybe midi. Is it straightforward?

Have you seen Caustic 3? It does all (and more) I could expect from a little music app that runs on a smart phone or tablet...

Yep, I HATE it with a passion. Far too intrusive... But don't go by my opinion alone, since I'm too biassed ;-)

when you say far too intrusive do you mean that you need to use i-tunes to do it?

Re apps - it tends to be that there is more for ios - e.g the Eventide H9 controller which isn't available for Android.

I had itunes for a few months when I first got my ipad2. Removed it after realizing what a bloated intrusive mess it was. They started icloud service so itunes wasn't necessary for me anymore.

Been on iCloud services for a few years now. It works for what I need. Have not checked out cloud drive yet but probably will soon.

I don't use my PC much for anything anymore except work. Occasionally something pops up that is useful on PC like the Isotonik Circuit editor for Novation Circuit, but very little by way of music related stuff anymore. The ipad covers my browsing, email, music apps, and just about everything else. I have a lot of music hardware too that isn't dependant on PC.

For final mixes and uploads to my websites that host my music, I use my main mixers usb out to focusrite interface connected to ipad and into Meteor app for final stereo mixdown and direct upload to Soundcloud or Soundclick. I have Audition on PC that can do the same thing if I choose.

For samples and such, dropbox, or if needed to get in my favorite sampler program, Beatmaker 2, I use the ftp service that the app sets up and ftp files in and out from PC over wireless lan.

I hate iTunes, because it doesn't have ridiculously basic functions, like monitoring your music collection for changes, which means that it doesn't show it, when i copy new music on my hard drive, and also that it only lets me organize my music by tagging, which obviously is not present on every music, for example when you ripped your CD's without automatically or manually tagging them. Or if you download DJ mixes from the net, which aren't tagged. I only use it to update the firmware of my iPod (which hasn't been updated since 2007, so there's not even a Need to use it anymore...), to fill my iPod i use a plugin for foobar2000. Sorry, but iTunes for me is the incarnation of the Apple attitude to decide for the user what he needs or not, and to always go their own way, totally disregarding what is the norm, and what others do. Actually i even tried to like it, and used it, but i couldn't.

I've installed itunes for touchosc, loopy, midimux, im1, I was afraid of all the noise since my win8.1 pc is just for music and I'm really picky on the subject.
Never used it as a player, just for files exchange with those apps that mention filetransfer via itunes. Not a problem, so far.
It even saved me in the first modstep's weeks, removed files from the shared folder and an autocrashing modstep reverted to a working modstep.
Never checked if itunes has some nasty agent chewing cpu in the background, cpu power's still awesome, usbmidi still solid, etcetera.

I'd recommend not a mini, though. I'm on air2 and screen space is a nerve saver, never enough... :phones:

thanks for the replies.

I actually already have i-tunes on the PC and it seems no better or worse than the Windows Media player but my question was more about using i-pad with a PC and file exchange and that has now been answered. Thank you
