some photos. the top one is the old one, made from an
ikea Rast pine 'bedside table', chopped, with stained varnish,
which just happens to be exactly 6U. - in fact, if you move the
lateral pieces, you would get 8U, as the side panels are 400mm:
8x 45= 360, add 4mm for space, = 400mm. cost 8.99eu, readymade
kit, minus rackrails.(realised this after i bought pine board+cuts..)

idea was: something quick, cheap, with reasonable
chances of a good result for a bodger.
this was really quick and easy, cheap, only tools needed a
screwdriver + drill with some bits. this pine
board is lighter and stronger than mdf, and a 'nobler' material
(comes in 200cm x 30/40/50/60 x 18ml, eg: 20eu for 30cm)

requirements: easy to handle and carry, not too deep
or big

looking at doepfer eurorack, 6U makes sense (if you'd ever
consider starting a little modular):

http://www.doepfer.de/a100_man/a100m_e.htm

but you get 2 'free' U with 8U for the same sort of size.
not too high to have something sitting on top, etc.
