it seems like using the lowest column would make much more sense as a controller since it's up and down and stays out of the way of your playing with the other hand. Using the lowest row as for example a mod wheel or cc, it seems like your would be crossing under your playing hand and there is a pretty big range there as well. Plus, if it were using the low column (left side for right hand playing), you only lose one note of the grid, but you lose 5 notes with low row.
From what I've read there seems to only be a low row mode, not low column, but maybe I missed it. Am I wrong? Thanks.

Unfortunately that isn't possible due to a limitation in the design of the sensor. It's described the FAQ and Specs pages:
• Sensor Limitations:
> Y-axis (forward-backward) movement is limited to the 17 mm vertical dimension of each note pad. Sliding your finger vertically across rows will result in a new note when the touch enters the next vertical note pad.
