I concur. Wendy Carlos is definitely a source of inspiration in a contest like this. Some of her sounds need to be there.Howard wrote:Walter/Wendy Carlos - all sounds in "Switched on Bach" and "Timesteps"

Not saying I'm against it, but ALL sounds is a bit of an ask.fmr wrote:Some of her sounds need to be there.Howard wrote:Walter/Wendy Carlos - all sounds in "Switched on Bach" and "Timesteps"
Are there perhaps one or two famous W. Carlos sounds that are distinctive enough to be recognizable out of context?
I was going to suggest Tomita, all sounds from 'Snowflakes Are Dancing', but decided against for the same reason - can't really decide upon one uniquely definitive 'Tomita' sound.

A sound from the 'modern' era - Goldfrapp 'Lovely Head', the singing synth line that come in at 1:16. IIRC, it's Alison Goldfrapp's voice controlling a synth (MS20?) via pitch to cv.

I thought it's her singing through the MS-20 filter?hakey wrote:A sound from the 'modern' era - Goldfrapp 'Lovely Head', the singing synth line that come in at 1:16. IIRC, it's Alison Goldfrapp's voice controlling a synth (MS20?) via pitch to cv.

I read watched the article and well it was nicely put together it is AMAZINGLY subjective. I would like to add some nice sounds I though stood out on songs.
Moby's violin type sound you can here it all over Extreme Ways
Visage the lead on Fade to Grey
INXS Both lead bouncy sound and strings Kiss the Dirt (Falling Down the Mountain)
4 Strings pluck sound Take Me Away (Into the Night)
ATB pluck sound Long Way Home
Kraftwerk lead Computer World
Rush lead Subdivisions
Echo & the Bunnymen FM chime sound Bring On the Dancing Horses

There was a thread here.Urs wrote:I thought it's her singing through the MS-20 filter?hakey wrote:A sound from the 'modern' era - Goldfrapp 'Lovely Head', the singing synth line that come in at 1:16. IIRC, it's Alison Goldfrapp's voice controlling a synth (MS20?) via pitch to cv.
Someone suggests that it's her voice going through the MS20 with pitch follow patched in.
It does sound like there is more going on than her voice just passed through a filter with no dynamic interaction between the two.
Anyway it's a very distinctive sound with a synthetic timbre that could conceivably be replicated in Zebra or ACE.

That's another one. Lots of great sounds. But this one would be easier for me. Just pick two or three sounds from Pictures at an Exhibition (my favourite Tomita album).hakey wrote:Not saying I'm against it, but ALL sounds is a bit of an ask.fmr wrote:Some of her sounds need to be there.Howard wrote:Walter/Wendy Carlos - all sounds in "Switched on Bach" and "Timesteps"

Maybe a vote-based forum system like the Cableguys' one would help choosing the most wanted synth sounds made. Name, short desc, and a YT link and time; and has a space for tips to achieve the sound.
Or, trying a free survey application, can googled easily.
My suggestion for a sound:
No Good

The bass and lead. Mostly the bass shines, with the filter between 2:30 and 2:34

One of my fav synth line:
1) You dropped a bomb on me by the Gap band. Bassline
2) Vangelis - Spiral The synth line in the beginning
3) The percussion synth riff going on the background in the movie Thief when they are doing the big heist. Tangerine Dream.
4) lady Stay Dead by Luke Slater. The synth line is so cool. Got that from a future music I think a few years back.

Don't know if this was posted before, but has some good ones with audio clips too.

My pick is from the Chick Corea Elektric Band. 1st record.
The track India Town. The sound that he used throughout the song.
Although, the lead is obviously stacked sounds. At times you can hear just the one sound being played, which reminds me of a sitar meets a ep in some ways.
