A number of questions...
Is ReWire an "open" standard - i.e. can I implement ReWire without paying someone?
Are there any open source examples of ReWire participants (or whatever one calls such things)?
Would such a thing as an open source standalone ReWire VST/VSTi wrapper be useful? (I assume Bidule does ReWire - it seems to do everything! - so this is probably already covered...)

ReWire doesn't require a royalty, however ...
I think the ReWire VST wrapper sounds like a good idea, though, especially in programs which don't support ReWire on their own.
I think it's highly unlikely there's any open-source examples of ReWire available.propellerheads.se wrote:Propellerhead Software will issue licenses to companies in the audio or music industry interested in creating commercial ReWire applications.

Due to the legal aspects of the agreement you need to have a proper, registered company in order to qualify as a ReWire developer. We do not allow private persons, schools or companies in other types of businesses to become licensors.
