Doesn't Adobe Afterbirth, er... Aftereffects have some waveform rendering and spectrograph drawing functions built in?

Another option would be to use an After Effects template, many of them respond to audio and there's loads of free ones available.

You don't need "templates". After Effects has built in plugins for visualizing spectrograms and waveforms. There is also Trapcode Soundkeys which let's you generate keyframes from specific frequency ranges in your audio.

I used sometimes the waveform virtualization in AfterEffects for my videos. It can be used as a starting point for a lot more effects.
