Akai timestretch algorithm

Anyone know what method the old akai samplers used for time stretching? Was it granular or change rate and pitchshift?

The old ones used the most basic algorithm possible - I guess you could call it granular, but with big regularly-spaced granules.

The S3000 onwards I think did the same thing but split the signal into 2 (or more?) frequency bands first and tried to pick good grain sizes.
