Whilst agreeing with many previous suggestions, I didn't see these :
James Black
Bernard Purdie
Charly Antolini
Grady Tate
Zigaboo Modeliste
Lala Kovacev
Jabo Starks
Czeslaw Bartkowski
Mitch Mitchell
Jojo Mayer
Brian Bennett
Idris Muhammad
Mongo Santamaria
...the list goes on, but I won't.

How far back you wanna go here?
Anyone mention Baby Dodds yet? Those drummers who backed the likes of Louie Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton and King Oliver were responsible for making some real contributions to the way the instrument is played.

I didn't mention Baby Dodds, but I thought it. Very good call.
I'll second Dannie Richmond, and add Max Roach and Brendan Canty.

My vote goes to Bill Ward. I like his way of playing straight rhythm only when absolutely necessary and filling everything else with fill-like jazz influenced stuff. Perfect combination!

Did anyone mention Karen Carpenter yet? More known for her singing, but she is one of a small number of drummers who really know how to drum on ballads without making the drumming instrusive or boring. She had a great relaxed feel and would put those really delicate fills in that were just perfect for the dynamics of the song.

That made me laugh cuz It reminded of a friend of mine who really got wasted like that on stage. Not so funny for the rest of the band though.
