I am aware of this, and while maybe some pirates MAY take that into consideration, most will not.
Baring that in mind, as I was saying, it's better for the developer - big or small - to try to continue to encourage customer loyalty, because using restrictive methods to undermine your actual legitimate customers doesn't do anything but harm your customers and make piracy look that much more attractive.

This is not actually entirely true. In the 90's many software developers were quite willing to openly admit that even though they do not like piracy they would prefer if it was rather their than their competitors software that is pirated. I think this still holds true.Uedi wrote: from a developers perspective any kind of piracy is not acceptable.
The simple fact is that if a kid downloads Waves Mercury and uses it then it would not count as a lost sale for Waves. But it is a one potential paying customer in the future.
The problem arises when a commercial artist or a studio who could easily afford a Waves Mercury downloads and uses it to make money. Then it is a potential lost sale.

Bill Gates said that. And yes, Microsoft can afford to lose a couple of sales for some marketing tricks. I highly doubt small businesses will see it the same way, because they can't afford it.robotmonkey wrote:This is not actually entirely true. I reeeeeeaallly want to hear Avicii/Martin/Aoki to answer some hard questions about music piracy...
The others get a pass until they make the first ten million.
But these guys who are obviously approaching music outright as a business/career (regardless of their income, tbh) should be the first ones to pay for licenses, and the first ones to get flamed alive for flaunting warez.
And yeah, at some point the warez groups themselves will get annoyed with this kind of 'abuse'. They wont stop cracking, but they can make it a lot harder to get ahold of stuff...

They'd probably say "I made money nontheless, didn't I?".highkoo wrote:I reeeeeeaallly want to hear Avicii/Martin/Aoki to answer some hard questions about music piracy..
Piracy is a very difficult topic and it's very hard to know how much damage it does (It's a lot, that's for sure).
I think the worst and best solution at the same time may be to simply ignore it (Especially as a developer).
It will never go away, it will only get far, far worse in the future (Especially since the big companies are doing everything to reduce the percieved value of software these days. People are complaining about the price of 4€ "apps").
There certainly has to be some kind of paradigm shift in the future. Software is becoming more and more important, but isn't really percieved that way.
Cheers

Probably Team AiR will quit some time but then there will be new groups with similar names, for example Team RAiD...highkoo wrote:And yeah, at some point the warez groups themselves will get annoyed with this kind of 'abuse'. Let's be honest, our current model of value, the economy, work, and what it means to be human is due for an upgrade, because it's unsustainable for almost everyone. This is affecting plugin developers and all other walks of life, not to mention the omnicide of the planet and it's ecosystems. Everything is getting devalued exponentially, including life it's-self.Bronto Scorpio wrote:They'd probably say "I made money nontheless, didn't I?".highkoo wrote:I reeeeeeaallly want to hear Avicii/Martin/Aoki to answer some hard questions about music piracy..

There's this kinda cool idea of bashing the "bleeding heart" eco-windgers, but at the end of the day, they're right, maybe that's why so many hate them
