Recently I've grown very fond of docu's, concert registrations (with extra footage) and dramatized movies about musicians. Predominantly from the 70's era but also some contemporary stuff. I was wondering if people have some more recommendations.

So far I've seen:

- Woodstock
- Don't look Back (Dylan)
- Leonard Cohen Isle of Wright
- Let's get Lost (Chet Baker)
- Marley
- Seaching for Sugar Man
- Shine a Light (Rolling Stones)
- The Last Waltz (The Band)
- Straight no Chaser (Thelonious Monk)
- When You're Strange (The Doors)
- Tom Waits' Jukebox
- Led Zeppelin
- Lever! Leeft! (Cornelis Vreeswijk)
- Festival Express (Janis Joplin, The Band e.o.)
- Stop Making Sense (Talking Heads)
- A portrait of Philip Glass

Looks great. Thanks! It wasn't after I watched 'Dallays Buyers Club' with an amazing Leto I found out he also had a band. Looks uncompromising!

Let it be - one of the most in-depth looks to a splitting process of a band.

"Ne Change Rien" (2009, Pedro Costa)

Features the French actress/singer Jeanne Balibar and the great guitarist/songwriter Rodolphe Burger (founding member of the 80s band Kat Onoma).

You'll either love it (I do) or hate it -- check out the review excerpts below for an idea why. The cinematography and sound, though, are incredibly beautiful.

"Being a professional musician is a job. And like any other job, it can sometimes be a grind. Most music documentaries obscure that point, focusing on the glamour of stardom, the spectacle of performance, or the melancholy of life on the road. But what about the tedium, the long hours spent holed up in a studio or practicing for a gig? Leave it to Pedro Costa, the Portuguese master of “difficult” cinema, to shape a rockumentary out of the “boring” stuff that’s usually left on the cutting room floor....Ne Change Rien isn’t for everyone—or really, for anyone who can’t stomach epic long takes or a deliberate lack of incident. But the movie offers a rare glimpse into the mundane side of making music, acknowledging it as not just a creative endeavor, but also a formal discipline. Beyond all that, the film’s weirdly mesmerizing in its repetition, in part because the songs—moody guitar ballads, mostly—create such a trance-like atmosphere."

You simply must watch "soundcity" if it hasn't been mentioned.

Loved the one about Jeff Lynn

Recently saw the one on Smithsonian Channel about "Folkways"

Just saw the "Blondie" in NY one last night

Even if you don't like the "Foo fighters" "Back and Fourth" is good.

It's kind of nerdy but I thought "I dream of wires" was pretty good. I was glad I bought a copy of the hardcore edition.

Oh yeah, i wanted to watch that sometime.
There's another recent one in a probably similar vein, "Totally Wired". It's about the berlin based synth heaven "Schneider's Büro", and the guys selling their synths there.

Haven't watched either, maybe it's about time to give the on demand web stuff a try.

And btw, step across the border is readily available: http://youtube.com/watch?v=WahnZ1HcW00

Wow.. All great tips! Thanksalot!

Yesterday I watched 'Beware of mr. Baker' about Ginger Baker (Cream). Quite a portrait as well :)

I also remember watching a trailer of a scandinavian techno duo living and meditating in a small cabin in the woods (filled with synths) but I can't remember the artists nor name of the docu. Anyone have a clue?
