is edm too formulaic?

What happens is that some creative producer takes a base sound/formula and adds something to it or modulates it. Others start to like this sound, then it is labeled a genre, gets a description on Beatport and the damage is done, everyone tries to sound the same to crawl up along the top-20 list using same production tricks.

That's why I like this new UK model of not defining the genre or style, post UK garage, post grime, post trap, post dubstep. Can't nail it down -- good.

The only modern genre that is more stale, hackneyed, predictable and formulaic than EDM is metal. Those people even have a dress code.

- sure, you don't mind EDM and make a point about that about any time people have a negative statement but Coldplay's the limit. :scared:
I don't even know but two things about it, really. Once they were on Stephen Colbert's program and they were clearly trying to come across as novel or innovative or at least "alternative".
They sucked, the drummer simply sucks if that is any evidence. I took it as a bad sign of things. Yeah, I stay away from most of these things, that's right.
Then one day I found out that this song I would hear in Walgreen's or Safeway a lot, for a time anway, 'Yellow' is a Coldplay song. I'm fine if I never hear it again, but it's a nicely crafted pop song that I understand the appeal of completely. For what it is, I say it's brilliant.

I'm equally in the fog about EDM. Everything I heard on KVR out of it truly was bleak.

as has been said, many music genres are formulaic in structure, but with a huge scope for human dynamic within the frame

with 'most' edm, even the grey in between is daubed on by rote, everything having been learned from youtube tut's etc; riser here, filter sweep there

it's easy to see the appeal for people who normally would never have come to music in any way, now being able to so easily ape the music they love. it would be hard to discourage it if they weren't just devaluing the whole process with this formulaic caca

i used to think some people here *cough* sendy were a little harsh with this whole subject. now i surrender to the ol' man curmudgeon that resides within. he is far more honest, and has no problem declaring that pretty much all of it is just shit, and needs to just f**k off

It happens in every genre, though. Nobody ever seems to get that the greats didn't get to be that way by being soulless copies of their influences.
Even if the piano player can't play, keep the party going.

I have no idea what these buzzwords are, can anyone link to any EDM music? If you're not too scared to reply, that is.

Probably. Misquoted from another forum:

"Usually most songs start with a kick and snare groove. Then add in highhats, bass, melody, and filler pads."

yup i give my opinion in threads whatever theyre about.
whether i mean anything i type in these threads is of course unknown to all but me
to be completely honest i dont really mind coldplay as such, its chris martin i have an issue with, its the blue eyes, he freaks me out whenever i see him. im sure hes a lovely bloke but those eyes! :scared:

I really don't follow most of these things too closely. :scared: On the Colbert Report the whole presentation was more irritating than I even expected. Wasn't very musical.[/get the hell off my lawn]

other than that and 'Yellow' all I know is the one gag out of 'Godwin Revisited' (the 'general public' voted for Hitler and likes Coldplay!).

can we please stop using the term "edm"? it has no meaning whatsoever.

i literally dont know what kind of music the op is asking about.
