Not really what you're talking about
But I'm trying to start a band like NIN... struggling to find a local singer!

But yeah, NIN are "electronic industrial rock" I reckon, not quite "industrial metal", you could look into The Killing Joke (although they're heavier)

This band was a big influence on NIN, but also a bit heavier and more disturbed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hoNRZLOzR2s

Yip, Ministry are awesome, Psalm 69 is one of those rare albums that's awesome from start to finish, all killer no filler! I first read that as "This band was influenced by NIN"... I was about to say "Ra Ra Ra Ministry are waaaaay older!" ... then my reading comprehension improved .nineofkings wrote:This band was a big influence on NIN, but also a bit heavier and more disturbed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hoNRZLOzR2s

Going back to the early days, I can think of a few specific albums which fell into the same category as Prett Hate Machine. Consolidated's "The Myth of Rock" comes to mind. Ministry's "Twitch" was an interesting intermediary album between their early pop days and the later guitar-oriented stuff. Then there were the Trent Reznor protégés such as Marilyn Manson and Machines of Loving Grace. Yes, Killing Joke is another good one. If you want to look a little further afield, you could try Skinny Puppy, Cabaret Voltaire, Front Line Assembly...
But I'm a little stumped when it comes to later NIN. Who else did the Downward Spiral style? Or Ghosts? I'm sure there must have been plenty of copycats, but I never heard them.

The Spice Girls. Both 'bands' are equally annoying.

I like the jackets but the sleeves are much too long. And the padded walls ...

Phew, too rich for my blood.......
Though I do expect many non-rich entities to end up in a padded cell soon......
Back to reality (from my mystic POV) .....
NIN was one-of-a-kind imnsho. I can't think of anything that was that f**ked up, that raw, that musical, and that gripping.
Sorry.

Oh... do you watch Twin Peaks? NIN had a guest spot a couple of weeks ago, very cool.
