Can't say I'm familiar with much of the Novation stuff, but hey, Hypernova sounds great and the price is right

The HyperNova is quite clearly very much inspired by Novation's classic synth, as it is stated on their webpage that it is "Based on a well known polyphonic synthesizer from the late 90's"
How can you do a proper review without having a knowledge of the hardware synth
the Hypernova is based on?

So, rather than just picking stuff up and randomly using it here and there in my compositions, I use these This Thing Rules segments to better familiarize myself with the ins and outs of the software, force myself to create a whole new piece of music just with that software in the process (or at least heavily featuring that software), and then, share it with people who might be interested in hearing about how I liked it.Numanoid wrote:Huh?bydavidrosen wrote:Can't say I'm familiar with much of the Novation stuff

I actually don't have a piece of music hardware in my studio aside from an M-Audio Keystation 88es haha. I'm definitely not a hardware guy.
As for the quote from their webpage, I was definitely aware of that, and if you asked me to make a list of 10 brands they could have been talking about, Novation would have been on the list haha. But what Novation's actual synths were like? No clue. Not my area of expertise.
Thanks for reading though. Hope you found the article or my demo interesting regardless.

The developer already sterted a thread at the Samples sub-forum:
http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic ... &p=6243264
There he mentioned that a Supernova 2 Pro X Platinum (48 voices) was used for sampling BUT without using the original filters, effects and LFOs which were repleaced by those in Kontakt 5. Alone due to that it shoukld be difficult to get it sound like the real thing.
BTW last week i purchased a Novation UltraNova (the latest one form teh Nova series synths...) and i love it:
http://novationmusic.de/synths/ultranova#
The synth engine overall seems to be even more complex than the Superrnova II which is maybe not obvious when having a look at the unit.

Thanks for posting the link to that thread. The developer definitely put some work into making this a worthwhile package.

MAybe the us of the name "HyperNova" is inded not so clever. The latest/current version of tef the Nova synths is the "UltraNova" (as ajust mentioend i got one last week...).Djnro1 wrote:Hope for the developper he has the legal rights to use that name! I wouldn't let it go if I was Novation...
So the official names were: Nova -> Nova 2 -> SuperNova -> SuperNova 2 -> UltraNova
Additionally there is also "MiniNova", a smaller Mini keys version of the UltraNova.
If they keep going this way of choosing names sooner or later they could get the idea to create a synth called "Hypernova" and i guess they would not be very pleased to see that there is alraedy a Kontakt library with that name (and a design iclose to the Nova/Supernova synths).

I am not a lawyer, but it's my understanding that unlike brand names, which are relatively easy to protect with an adequate legal budget (remember Apple vs. the Beatles, anyone?), product names are difficult to stake a claim to. This would be particularly true if the name were based on an already common word, like "nova" for example. The Chevy Nova preceded any synth of that name and Novation clearly never had to abandon the name of their synths in that line.

Actually you protect a name in one or several classes. Whether it's a brand name or a product name, or both, is not relevant.

As far as i know the name Hypernova wasn't used before. If developers have to think about future problems about a name that could be used for future products, nothing would be released.Djnro1 wrote:Hope for the developper he has the legal rights to use that name!
