I'm a complete newbie to Ableton Live, trying to evaluate Blue Cat Remote Control.
I want to use Joysticks, and using the settings can rename C1, C2 etc in the settings/skin for a particular instance of a Joystick. However, on Ableton's display I still see just C1, C2 etc, not the new names.
I need meaningful names on the Blue Cat controls when shown by Ableton Live- can I do this?

Unfortunately this is indeed the expected behavior: many hosts do not support parameter name changes at this point, so it is currently not supported.
