I don't know about the best, but I consistently use PSP's OldTimer and have good results. The mastering version add's some options but I really like OldTimer. It just works and works well.

Not mentioned, Flux, some of the best compressors made.

Also Compassion is both very musical and flexible.

Ozone 5 is also a great sounding work horse.

In reality, it really comes down to what style of music you produce and the type of dynamics you choose.

Many compressors can get the job done but few can do it with both transparency and musicality.

This also relies on the correct use of techniques, not just tools.

This. The "best" compressor (whatever that is) can sound like crap in the wrong hands.

They (it) can't be "the best" without a 'DAC' switch.

My best ones:

Tracks Black, White, 670 & Opto
PSP oldTimer & BussPressor
Arts Acoustic CL1
Softube FET
DCAM Dynamics
Soundtoys Devil-Lok (that's dist and comp, but it rocks regardless)
Pro-C
UBK-1
Vertigo VSC-2

I'm so jealous that DC8C works for everybody; it crashes my DAW. Tony was awesome in trying to fix, but never did find a solution. It would definitely be in my list, should I be able to use it

I'm looking forward to trying sknote's dbx. Hoping it will killer :D

Compressor 260

And EQ 601 is the only one I use also. Extremely clean and keeps the sound open.
The 276 was also pretty good from memory. It looks like a 1176 emulation.

What is 260 emulating? dbx?

Also I think the true star of their VCM is the Portico series, I love the compressor but haven't been brave enough to spend that amount on it yet.

Focusrite LiquidMix is also a great choice!

Hardware-Controller + DSP Host
40 Comps + 20 EQs (all vintage modelled/emulating)
170€

UBK-1 is my fav for drum/2-buss duty. It's damn versatile, is inspired by/built upon many classics (from what I've gathered, Splat is API2500, Glue is 1176 full button, Squish is EMI comp etc..) but with its own twist, and it sounds absolutely fantastic. It's the only comp I use, I love it.
DC8C is also a great sounding one, amazing set of features as well.
I'm pretty curious to hear/demo new Slate's VBC, even if I don't need a new comp.

I thought I owned a lot of compressors .. guess not :P

Well for all the payware I own.

Molot (freeware) really is very good and with all its parameters and two different emulation algorithms flexible.

Both klanghelm comps.

And for all out smash and grab sonalksis uber comp.

I have others but I am going with best meaning most useful or specialised at a certain task.

Firewire only. I would have bought it if it's usb. I think that's the reason why it didn't sell that well. :(

+1 for Stillwell The Rocket

Post

Flux Syrah, Stillwell's comps, The Glue, Alpha Compressor, Vertigo VSC-2, FET Compressor (Softube), DC8C, the Molot, and even the Audio Damage's Rough Rider can sound great on some material...well ok I'm a plug comp slut...

I like the Melda Production MCompressor very much. I've tried all kinds- I'm not generally a fan of the "vintage" "colored" kind of compressors.

Honestly I think the famous vintage compressors evolved in a "turd polishing" environment, where thin strident sounds were made beefy by gear. Same goes for a lot of "vintage" gear.

I keep seeing DC8C pop up in compressor threads and haven't tried it out yet. Your post has inspired me to finally do it, thanks man.

Edit: It appears a demo isn't available...
Try the free DC1A it'll give you a taster

why is thas compressor cutting out the low end like a hi-pass filter. Is this desirable in a compressor ?
