FM radio bad reception effect

Hey ppl,
I grew up in a hilly area with a lot of broadcast towers quite close, and driving around I often encountered a lovely distortion on FM radio as the landscape mucked up the radio waves. It was a beating in the reception volume, with the sound itself taking on a very particular lo-fi character.
I've always been thinking what a cool effect that would make, as in my perception it has a strange, spacey, hard sci-fi loneliness to it, but unfortunately I haven't even been able to find an instance of it recorded on youtube, let alone a VST plugin that emulates it. I'm not even certain about the exact physics involved, but I think it might have to do with interference from waves reflected off the landscape, creating a beating effect...
The discussions and plugins I've seen that address "radio distortion" usually just boil down to recordings of radio static. I'm not talking about static. I'm talking about a specific distortion to the signal itself. I think people who drive around in hilly urban areas will know what I'm talking about. Is there anything out there that allows you to replicate this effect?

Perhaps you could use Radio Effect VSTi and automate the tune knob with something like an LFO. Yet the distortion of the signal and the added noise is not probably not quite what you're after I guess.

The more I hang around at KVR the less music I make.

Wow, not bad. It sounds rather convincing in the video.Timfonie wrote:Perhaps you could use Radio Effect VSTi and automate the tune knob with something like an LFO. Yet the distortion of the signal and the added noise is not probably not quite what you're after I guess.

You could shell out a few bucks (quick search $5-$60) and get an FM Transmitter, send your audio through it and record the output. Change location of transmitter / reciever to create more / less static effect (like swinging a solid wooden door open / closed).
I know its not a vst, but IMO, definately my favorite of methods. Theyre small, so it shouldnt add too much clutter to the hardware section of the room
If you can find an older tech model, where the channel selection is a wheel, you can get even more radio static goodness by adjusting it on the fly, getting some bleed from other stations. But even with the digital versions, stuff like door, or just moving closer to a window will get similar bleed.

You can use aliasing in a good way:
take a synth which has aliasing, put a saw wave on really high note (frequency something like 10kHz), and modulate the pitch slowly. You got those fm waves! Add a low pass filter to remove the fondamental frequency which is really annoying, and there you go.

@fifou64:
Thanks. Your method is perfect for recreating the sound of AM, Shortwave, and Citizens Band radio noise.
