Stutter Edit's buffer size?

Any Stutter Edit wizards here?

I recently picked it up and am trying to get a good handle on the effects so I can start building my own. However, I'm a little baffled by how it decides what the buffer size is. It looks to be one bar based on where the playhead is when the effect is trigger .. or at least that's what I thought until I set the gesture length to 2 bars.

Hope someone can explain. Everything else seems pretty straightforward.
