I went for a more epic Christmas sound in the lines of Mannheim Steamroller and Emerson, Lake & Palmer's "I Believe In Father Christmas".

I mixed in the Kick Sub and opted for the SSD Snare Bottom & Top rather than using the JSX Snare. If you would like more info - let me know and I will be glad to post.

Yeah, I used that too, with some pre & post filtering it is actually quite versatile. Used their microshift too(AMS clone) on the slide guitar too. Soundtoys rock!

Didn't even occur to me to filter LR for effect like that, that's a great tip. I have echoboy and the littles, they're such sweet effects, they dial right in and totally rock.

Hello all, after some struggle my winter mix is coming ! :)

I wanted to make the mix clear and wide, with a long icy reverb that would mke me think of the snow. And I tried to make the piano punchy and bright, and also to emphasize the violins and the likes. For the final a punchy beat and more grit in the distorded guitars. Finally a dep round bass with a bit of low mid grit that makes it clear to hear even on my laptop. Hope I did it well ^^

More details about the mix to come.

Good luck to all the contestants ;)

Hi!

My mix... just in time!
Mixed in Ableton. Lots of DAW eq and compressors, plus:
DDMF 6144, Satson, Reverberate, Klanghelm SDRR and some light Elysia Alpha on the master.

I didn't use any of the alternative tracks - the first set seemed to work well together. Apart from eq for separation (to the best of my ability), I focused on the build of the track and long-term mix dynamics, trying to make each section rise or fall to support the music and make each section interesting.

Good luck everyone!

I must admit I don't know enough about what I'm doing to say what kind of mix I was aiming for. I just tried to make it clear and balanced, and then went for a vibe that suited the track. In theory :) We'll see!

Hi all!
I mixed in Reaper, this time i tryed to mix withous seeing eq curves and spectrum analyzers.
All eq work is done via Mellowmuse EQ1A, somethimes ReaEq only for some harmonics cleaning. I also used ReaComp extensively, only to give it a chance! :-D
Only default tracks where used.

Hello, everyone! Thank you all for your participation in another KVR Mix contest. Good luck to all of you!

Thank you for the kind comments on the song. They are appreciated! I had fun with this one.

The dog, my WIFE'S dog, who barks at EVERYTHING picked the perfect time to bark and I didn't want to recut the track so I just left it in. If she had barked throughout the track, I may have recut it but she waited until the end so it didn't bother me. I think it adds a bit of character to the track. To those that left it in, good for you!

On with the evaluations!

Photonic

Strings are a little too loud in the quieter parts, like during the mellotron solo and quieter parts of the slide work. But other than that, great mix!

Kolyev

I like the sound of the snare but it seems a little loud. Maybe reduce some highs instead of the level? I'm not in love with the kick, either. I like the overall sound of the drums (with noted exceptions) but there's something about the kick I can't put my finger on. It doesn't sound particularly bad during the song but it just doesn't sound right to me during the stingers at the end, where you can hear it by itself quite clearly. That's really my only nits. I like everything else you've done with the song!

Bigerax

Hats are a bit loud in the quieter parts. I like the sound of the snare! Overall, drums could come down about 2db, in those parts. Try a high shelf on the cymbals. Guitars sound a bit muffled in the end jam.

Ichad

I'm hearing a lot of distortion once all the other instruments come in. Really makes it hard to listen past it to check the rest of the mix.

Woung717

I like how the opening piano sounds mono and then spreads out a bit just before the slide comes in. Not sure if that is a good thing, though. But I like it. Crash cymbals sound pretty loud in the quieter parts. Some automation on the overall drums may be in order. Kick sounds like hitting an empty guitar case with an open palm. Guitars sound a bit muffled in the end jam.

thiagoam88

Love the sound of the bass guitar! Nice and round with no detail lost. I'm seeing (hearing?) a trend with the drums though. The drums are a bit overpowering in the quieter sections of the song. And the last snare hit at the end of the song could be brought down just a tad as well.

DR Audio Labs

Opening piano sounds nice! Slide sounds good, nice effect! Strings seem a bit loud for the quiet parts. Love the sound of the kick but not sure it's appropriate for this song. Seems a little "prog-metal" ish. Snare has a snappish sound to it. Can't quite put my finger on it. Bass guitar sounds good but could use a bit more detail. Rhythm guitars on the end jam could use a bit more high end. Not much, just to bring out a bit of detail there. I don't like the quick fade at the end to avoid our barky dog. I had a feeling that this would happen. The fade becomes too obvious.

G_Liou

Wow... great mix! I've listened twice and can't really come up with a single nit. Nothing is overdone or TOO fancy. You really mixed this to the song. You gave it ONLY what it needed and it sounds great! I guess if I HAD to come up with a nit, the snare could use a bit more reverb in some parts. And maybe a bit more high end on the rhythm guitars in the end jam.

Davias

Sounds a bit too compressed overall. I think your mix would work by taming the compression. The kick sounds a little "prog-metal" to me. I love that sound but it doesn't really fit the song.

zarf

This one sounds a little too compressed as well. I like how the piano sounds in the beginning but not real fond of the effect on the slide there. It's not so blatant when there are other instruments filling it up but in the beginning when it's just piano and slide it sounds too much. I'd back it off there and then bring it up a bit during the 2nd verse and then maybe a bit more during the chorus. You might want to bring some high's into the slide guitar at the end jam just to make it a bit different from the rest of the song.

piranha81

Opening sequence sounds really good. Good balance on the piano. Kick sounds good as does the snare but I'd lower the snare as well as the hats in the quieter parts. I'd like to hear a bit more definition in the strings, maybe some low end or maybe low mids. Other than that, not a bad mix at all.

VasDim

Opening piano sounds a bit boomy and unbalanced. I like the definition in the bass guitar. Drums seem a little loud throughout the song but only a little bit. Other than that, damned nice mix!

erictracks

Opening sounds good. Bass guitar is WAY boomy when it first comes in. Drums are a tad boomy as well. Like the snare sound. I think most of the nits I have would be fixed just by cleaning up the bottom end a bit.

Here are the "next-rounders."

Hi all,

Here is my second mix for this track. I lowered the strings in the mentioned areas. Listening to this track after a longer time I can fully understand that they have been a bit too loud.
