my favorite trick for a nice pad is two notes only
one held note is many times just right as well, but three notes just doesn't work(for me)

I wonder what do you mean by "pad" then?
Any susitained sound with many voices and lots of modulation will do. Make sure your spectrum goes all the way up to 20 kHz for this nice shimmering effect.
