"Reaper has an ugly GUI"

I think for the price, Orion should come with Dune vst, that would make it a much better value. Also I was reading that rewire was removed, if it were added back I would consider getting the whole app as a rewire slave. The pattern approach seems like it would be a good fit in that role.

But I'd like it as a slave, not a host. I was looking into this yesterday:michi_mak wrote:it does still act as ReWire host...braj wrote:...Also I was reading that rewire was removed...

Seems it was removed until Reason 6 64 bit rewire was available, but hasn't made a return yet?
Anyhow, again I'd like Orion not as my primary but it does look attractive for some stuff to me, just it is cost-prohibitive as a secondary DAW to me. $99 and Rewire slave mode would be ideal. It looks like it has a lot to offer in that capacity.

I have tried to work with some of the best rated skins for REAPER, but I must say I always end up with the default theme. It's the best theme for my eyes.
And I don't know any DAW in which you can customize your user interface in such detailed way as in REAPER. The GUI of the integrated effects looks really boring, but that don't hinder me as I wanna make music for the ears, not for the eyes.
The most ugly user interface I ever found is the one of the n-Track Studio...I tested it and I got eyestrain within minutes...

Most Reaper themes aren't as good as the default IMO. I only found a couple that I liked, Rado being the best by far. I do think with Reaper it is good to use the basic Windows theme and adjust the colors to get rid of the white areas though, they are hard on my eyes. Reducing eye strain isn't the same as just wanting eye candy.

That said, I also edited my Windows theme for Studio One to match its UI. GUIs do affect what draws your eyes and therefore attention, a well laid out UI will help you tune in the sound you are trying to attain.

Is the UI of Studio One as adjustable as that one of REAPER? Because exactly that is the specialty of REAPER that you can change everything of the UI. But I must admit, I mostly have no time to change anything, so I let the most things as they are...braj wrote:That said, I also edited my Windows theme for Studio One to match its UI. No definitely not you can't really change anything other than the alignment of the transport. It's ok though, it's not ugly and the built-in plugins look fantastic with clear, easy to comprehend controls. Frankly I wouldn't have minded if Reaper had only the one default skin, it would have saved me time fooling around in the Stash My main gripe with the UI has always been the Windows components.Tricky-Loops wrote:Is the UI of Studio One as adjustable as that one of REAPER? No, you can't change anything with S1 theme. But with that being said, I have never found the need to.
I like and use Reaper daily, and I enjoy a good new theme as much as anyone. But with Studio One, most people seem to agree that it doesn't need tweaking because they got it right out of the box, and not just with colors and graphics, but ergonomics and the little details. So it doesn't have the same need to be changed for me.
Not a slight against Reaper. They are different beasts with slightly different focus in terms of workflow. Just the way I see it.

I do wish I could customize S1 a little, the clip color pallete for example could use a few options (let the user filter or change some colors, get rid of some of the bright greens for example, just makes me sick to scroll through them ). In Reaper I have it set up so if I load a certain plugin the track gets auto-magically colored that's the stuff I'm missing. But that is no big deal, still it is an area where Reaper really shines. Of course that is a third party that implemented that, so many users may not see that coolness in Reaper. You do have to be a 'power user' to really make Reaper stand out IMO, out of the box I can see why many find it not to their liking.
