Not sure about dizzying etc, it feels and flows quite naturally for me, but that might be something weird about meSendy wrote:Ok, I counted the phrase lengths in Oxbow Lakes, and I got:
4, 4, 4, 5
4, 4, 3, 4
4, 5, 4, 3
This pattern repeats, as various 4/4 figures fade in and out in the background. The effect is very dizzying and disorienting. I've composed in 3, 4, 5, 7 and 13 beats, and on a couple of tracks I switch from one sig to another here and there, but I've never tried mixing the meters up like that before. It's got to be worth a shot.

Yes, I agree it flows very naturally, which is good considering the theme of the album; but whenever I've tried to count out the beats, that's when I feel disoriented. It kinda defies analysis - I had to record it and count the beats by playing each phrase on it's own.
Here's one of mine that's mostly in 7/4. It switches to 3/4 for the final reprise of the main theme. I'm quite proud of it. I really get into the odd timesigs when I let myself, it can feel like the most natural thing... though I usually compose in 4/4 but with a lot of syncopation.

The thing that made me think to post it is the bar-crossing hihat part. Then he goes on to play all kind of things based in it.
He's playing this stuff and explaining it at the same time, talking in normal conversational flow, not preoccupied at all. That's insane. They call him The Alien.
