Sound design is hardly anything to be proud of,is it? It is about 2% of being a synth musician and surely any idiot can do it, can't they!?! I think it is more about whether or not you can be bothered doing it yourself or if you are happy getting some loser to do it for you, kind of like housework or car maintenance.

But then, you need the dang car mechanics---or even, janitors----

Without the vision of "sound designers", there wouldn't BE any "synths".
Just a thought.

How do you figure that? I'm sure it would have happened one way or another. I think it is pretty rude even using that term - at least in the film industry it is a a profession of reasonable scope and specialist skill.

Hmmm, I've wandered that at times, are musicians/creative people intelligent people and does the average synth musician have a good ear for developing good synth sounds or the aptitude for learning about how sounds work together, or do they rely on "pro" or any sound designers for there sounds??

It depends, of course. It's like any artistic discipline - does the painter who makes his own paints garner more respect than one who just buys them from the local art shop? Does any painter restrict himself to the colours in the tube/pot, or do they take those and mix them to create their own palettes? More importantly, does the guy in the factory who makes the paint and puts it the tubes think he is a special kind of artist in his own right? I doubt it.

Do you? I don't. I sometimes choose to get someone else to work on my car but I am quite capable of doing any of it myself, given the right tools. I would not own a car if I couldn't.

Yeah, I think good sound design is, but thats a matter of taste to a great degree I think.

Do you? I don't. I sometimes choose to get someone else to work on my car but I am quite capable of doing any of it myself, given the right tools. I would not own a car if I couldn't.

I could almost say that I've rebuilt --- more like restore --- some car like my 1968 Mustang fastback with the 429CJ in it from scratch. But then that would entail me to have actually made my own steel and such

But at some point one needs these guys around---just in case. As for the janitors--most businesses up here use them to clean up their establishments. It helps keep up appearances
