I bit of breakdance flavor to this I guess - Inspired by my all time favorite synth pioneers "The System" (David Frank and Mic Murphy of "Don't Disturb this Groove" fame.
Enjoy - I hope it's not all crap! :hihi:

Not crap at all!

If I had one complaint it's that the drums seem a bit dull (they seems to lack just a bit of presence imho)

Nice track though!

Thanks hibidy, I appreciate it.

Which drums in particular were you referring to? There's a whole of of them in this track. For the most part they're Oberheim DMX samples. I didn't tweak them since I wanted to have the original feel of the drum machine present. Just a bit of compression and reverb added.

The snare seems a bit lost to me. Same with the claps and cymbals.

Yeah, the snare isn't that distinct and originally I wanted it to be higher in volume. That didn't sound right either so I kept it as it was.
The Oberheim snare/claps used to sound this way I'm afraid. Listen to Colonel Abrams' "Trapped" which used them throughout.

yeah, don't read into it too much. I tend to think in those terms like "this needs more sizzle" or "maybe some HPF on this". Certainly no expert it's just that is how I heard it. BTW, I don't think volume is an issue at all.....pretty balanced to my ears.

Thanks, I value any opinion of course and learn and improve every time :) It's good to know how other people hear stuff as opposed to one self

Nice instrumental track, but I wished for more through out. Some kind of lead line perhaps... :) I also wished for a more solid bass. The one you have used is not that reminiscent of the 80s pop/funk you referred to. But I suppose it does fit the more relaxed and sparse arrangement in your track. :)

Yes, this doesn't really have much of a relation to the tracks we discussed elsewhere but that wasn't really the overall intention either. It's more of a mid 80s instrumental R&B track - a kind of b-side to a vocal track that was never made back then.
I never really got around to making an actual melody. I usually get some going in my tracks but everything I tried sounded overly cheesy so I opted out in the end.

Reminds me of my misspent youth.

I think the drums sound pretty authentic.

There really should be DX7 somewhere in there . . .

Post

Mix not bright enough... Levels all over the place. Sounds overly compressed.

Could you be more specific? You're the first one saying this. How did you listen to it, studio monitors or something else?

This was actually the first time in months I didn't use my DX7 :hihi:

Blasphemy! :hihi: How can you even think of doing an 1980s track without one! :hihi:

I'm so very very sorry himalaya. I promise it will never happen again. The e piano and harmonica will go on every track I do
In The future! Cross my heart, scouts honor etc.

It also needs a couple of Orch hits!!! 8)

That was ridiculously 80s in feel. I expected Eddie Murphy to pop in for a quick quip :D
