'plink plonk' synth like no other... because
I don't know any other physical modeling plucked string synth
which takes advantage of FM applied to the virtual strings
and incorporates a formants generator in the plectrum/hammer model.
All that helps for a more complex and rich harmonic spectrum.
This one I propose you is the first release with that engine and
it's a simple plugin with few parameters, but I think it's good enough
for many uses.
You better read this too
Scarborough_Fair_Note.rtf
especially if you're going to try the beta.
The synth is named "Scarborough Fair", it supports microtuning
and will be released (AU and VST 32 64) for a very low price.

You can:
1) freely download the VSTi beta for Windows 32-bit and 64-bit
(this beta shows a nag screen and plays up to 1200 notes per instance, then it needs to be reloaded, otherwise it's fully fuctional)
Download file here:
http://nusofting.liqihsynth.com/zip/Sca ... ta_0.4.zip
or the Mac AU 32-bit with installer
http://nusofting.liqihsynth.com/zip/Sca ... .4.pkg.zip
2) listen to some audio demos I recorded (to my taste of course)

Looking forward to your comments.

nice to see you releasing some of the technologies we hear in the music. i was curious about little sea waves

Beautiful.
I love how these sounds go from the more recognasible FM sounds, to some hybrid FM/PM to pure PM.
That Sea Waves demo is especially lush.
I wish I had some free time to try this out...

It definitely does. I like it. Although the frequency curve is nice generally, I'd like to be able to get a much brighter sound in some cases, but something limits it, so if you could add a setting it would be good. And an oversampling level selection would also be good.liqih wrote:'plink plonk' synth like no other... because

Very nice... I liked "Little Sea Waves" in particular, also.
I'm not a musician, but I've designed sounds that others use to make music. http://soundcloud.com/obsidiananvil

Thanks Rurik, nice of you to say thatxoxos wrote:nice to see you releasing some of the technologies we hear in the music. i was curious about little sea waves

TUN file, so far there's no interface to handle that, right now the plugin just loadsSidulacra wrote:Just curious...liqih wrote:The synth is named "Scarborough Fair", it supports microtuning

What microtuning format have you chosen for this instrument?
the TUN file which finds in its presets folder,
but I plan to have one TUN file per preset saved, with a load button on the GUI.
Seeing that Scala program can export TUN files easily
that seemed the easiest solution, didn't it?, <grin>

Thanks very much zeepzeep wrote:Little Sea Waves is a nice track. Great sounding synth.
a much brighter sound? The harmonic contents of "Scarborough Fair" is indeed limited to 15000 Hz,Shy wrote:It definitely does. I like it. but it seems strange (although possible) that you mean that.
The oversampling is currently fixed at 2X.
Since more that 2X is too CPU heavy IMHO and less that 2X is not bright and tuned enough, always IMHO.
Maybe I can see if the Brightness parameter can be pushed up more, <grin>
Would you like a much brighter sound in the low or in the high notes or both?
Thanks for the feedback

liqih: yep, I definitely could use some more high frequency content , in both low and high notes. Some of my favorite uses for FM synths involve shiny high frequency stuff (I love TG77 for that). It would be much better if it wasn't limited to 15kHz (with probably considerable roll off before it), it's already really nice but missing "that something".
About oversampling: it would be good to add a selection of 4x and 8x instead of only limiting it to 2x. When working at 88.2 or 96kHz, I could select 2x (though I probably wouldn't), and at 44.1 or 48kHz, 4x, and when rendering, 8x. It makes a big difference, especially with "unforgiving" patches. In any case, there's no reason not to give people this option. My CPU could handle it easily with way more notes/voices than I need anyway.

Agree with Shy regarding oversampling when rendering.
