For a while now I've been searching for a genuinely awesome choir VST. I could really use some haunting choir in some of my music, but I just can't really find anything that's extremely convincing.
What do you guys use for this effect?

Are talking about sample library with choir that do some general sounds like Ahhhh.....OOhhhhh.....Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm etc?
If to create harmonies from existing vocals(or other) you can do plenty with Waves Ultrapitch:
http://www.waves.com/Content.aspx?id=288
Up to 6 voices from 1, pitch, placement and formant correction individually.
Vielklang is another which uses midi to control the harmonies. I've just heard about it, never tried it myself.

Symphonic Choirs? Really? I'd sell mine for $65 if it was allowed. In any case it's not even remotely close to $65. For that money I'd probably look at this:

I have the female side of the Olympus Symphonic Choir - Venus. It's great, but it's a little bit of overkill for me. Soundiron also has the Elements version their Male and Female choir, which would have been perfect for me and it'd probably cover all your needs too. It's $129, but is a Kontakt Player instrument so you don't need to own Kontakt. It's still very powerful. They have 30% off sales a couple of times a year. I find the Micro choir to be underkill for me.

I recently have been looking for great choirs, more advanced than just the basic (I own Magnus, which is great for what it is).
Compiling the interesting Choir and Orchestral libraries Thread
I compiled a list of choirs, I think most of them were already mentioned, but my thread in the samples section has a link to a Google Spreadsheet that breaks down the features of each library.

No love for Angelic Vocal Pads?

It might not be what you are looking for, but I have used the early versions in my own music.
Hint - to get more out of them convert to SFZ/WAV and use in Wusikstation....
