Would these be okay for beginner's monitors? Keep in mind that right now I don't have anything but cheap computer speakers, and KRK KNS-8400 'phones, so anything on the speaker-front is an improvement.

It`s not a bug... it`s a feature!

Thanks. :)

Is there something wrong with the KRKs?

They've got a big sound, that isn't always overly accurate althrough perhaps a better choice for deep electronica with heavy bass (ok... dubstep) if your not working with a sub as well. Great vibey speakers but the D5's would also be my choice for a more precise sound in that price range if you need more clarity in the mids but I find them lacking down low without a sub.

Room treatment advised in both cases!

Yes, they're shite.

Tannoys or JBL LSR2325p are infinitely better imo.

I've got some 601A's sitting here and they're outstanding for the money.

Thanks, all. :)

I guess that's why I asked. ;)

I'll have to think about which ones I'd like to get. I think I have a couple of months to think about it.

Don't forget the treatment. It'll make all the difference, even if you make it yourself.

From 4:25 he compares KRK RP5G2 and Tannoy 501A:

They're the best I've ever owned, but I don't have any other "professional" headphones to compare them to. They seem to work okay for me.

good stuff...really love mine but not had too much time to use them yet

more comfortable and less fatiguing (sound) than my grados were....

Post

Certainly comfortable. I also can't believe how light they are compared to the Sony headphones I have. Those aren't professional headphones on any level, though. Very heavy on the bass frequencies.

KRKs are good considering the price. G2 is tighter in the low end comparing to G1 but still heavy as it's beenn stated above. Good for club production though. For general mixing I would go for similarly priced Yamaha HS50. To sum up obviously there are better monitors around but as with any of them it takes a bit of time to learn how they translate. KRKs are in the middle in that respect in my view comparing to competitors within same price tag.

I went with the Yamaha HS50 monitors. I shopped around and found them at $165 each. :tu:
