RG250DX arrived! Body is in perfect shpe, no discernable scratches. Neck perfect, frets and binding perfect, new strings.. only 2 things wrong:
- Missing whammy bar
- Center pickup is silent
#1 is esy to fix, #2 is going to take a multimeter. The switch crackles between positions 2 and 3 so I'd not be too surprised to discover that the switch is bad. Either that or it's just dirty and the middle pickup (it's a HSH config) is dead. A project, yes!
The pups? Meh. They sound OK but not any better than the stock ones in my Strat - slightly more mid in the bridge and neck bucker, but that's it. The pickups will have to be replaced!
No complaints, overall - I feel like I got my moneys worth and now she just needs a little TLC and pimping up. She's quite beautiful, I'll take pics tomorrow night and post the best of the lot.
Looks like I'll be busy for a while! Now, off to buy amultimeter.. lol..

Played it a LOT last night (ugh up way too late) and I'm real happy with the basic axe, but the buckers simply don't have the ooomph for real shredding. I can get as far as some heavy blues, but that's about it.. and the neck pickup does passable jazz (heh).
Fun times ahead while I set fire to things with a soldering iron!

Yeah, most of the Ibanez electrics I've played have had pickup replacements as the owners haven't like the originals, so I've never really heard the stock pickups.
Although I did once play the Vai endorsed one with its stock pickups and that thing was a pleasure to play and listen to!

A long, long time ago I owned an Ibanez Artist EQ, amazing guitar, and the pickups and electronics were good. The RG250DX being a mid-low end guitar, I expected so-so electronics and, well, I got what I expected.robojam wrote:Yeah, most of the Ibanez electrics I've played have had pickup replacements as the owners haven't like the originals, so I've never really heard the stock pickups.

But DAMN the neck is nice, and it's pretty lightweight. Throw in some DiMarzios and Duncans and a new switch and life will be good!
*edit* Just ordered a Weller soldering iron (with light!) and a digital multimeter from Newegg, should arrive next week. Musicians Friend carries new trem arms for the Ibanez so that's done.. but! Apparently there are 2 possible 5-way switches, a "normal" Strat-style one and a coil-splitting one. Now, supposedly the RG does the coil-split on positions 2 and 4, but it seems not ALL of them do and I can't find wiring diagrams for the sucker at this point. I might just have to open it up to see what kind of switch is there.. but I need to in order to scope out the wiring and spray cleaner on the switch anyway.

Well, after some research, I've decided to rewire the thing to NOT auto-split the humbuckers, and do a set-up based on this:
http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wi ... H_1v_1t_5w
..which is more simple to wire up for me and accomplishes what I want. This means the purchase of a standard 5-way switch, 2 humbuckers, a single coil, and a LOT of instant Starbucks coffee!!
If I can pull this off, then it's into the Strat!
Multimeter and iron will arrive next Wednesday, woot! Now to buy the switch.. then a new pup per paycheck until I have all 3. Then it's CLOBBERING TIME!

The problem here is 3 of your 5 positions will be noisy.woolyloach wrote:Well, after some research, I've decided to rewire the thing to NOT auto-split the humbuckers, and do a set-up based on this:

I like this switch, which is hum canceling in all positions and effortlessly provides 3 splits:

Nothing is effortless if it involves soldering more wires!Uncle E wrote:The problem here is 3 of your 5 positions will be noisy.woolyloach wrote:Well, after some research, I've decided to rewire the thing to NOT auto-split the humbuckers, and do a set-up based on this:

That switch is certainly affordable, though!

Yes, this is an excellent point! A hot, dark sounding hum-cancelling single coil, such as the Dimarzio Virtual Vintage Heavy Blues 2, will make an excellent match to humbuckers and won't sound harsh with a 500K volume pot. I hate using standard single coils with 500K pots.robojam wrote:The other thing you could do is buy a single coil sized rail and put it in the middle...
