i'm sure you've heard the excuses but still in your heart wonder why. now you will really know.
why 44100?
44100 x 4 = 176400
that's 176,400 samples for four seconds of audio at 44.1k. please note that 4 is one of the most ancient numbers.
well the square root of 176400 happens to be very near and dear to the audio profession (as proven by the smithsonian. it's the truth. now you know it and there is no deny).
perhaps, then, we should call inspiring dsp practitioners "four ears".

You're either very cleverly pointing out that the square root of 176400 is 420 (or -420), or you're very cleverly confusing square root with division by four. I'm betting on the former, but hey, both work.xoxos wrote:i'm sure you've heard the excuses but still in your heart wonder why. now you will really know.
why 44100?
44100 x 4 = 176400
that's 176,400 samples for four seconds of audio at 44.1k. please note that 4 is one of the most ancient numbers.

Do not be misled by the spurious information presented in this thread. I am here to set the record straight with true, scientific facts.
Since the days of ancient Mesopotamia, mankind has been fascinated by the moon and its cycles. Ancient astronomers counted 12 lunar cycles in a year. These lunar cycles correspond to the 12 months of our calendar. 12 squared is 144 and 144 backwards is 441. Coincidence? I think not!
Always remember and never forget, when the Illuminati chose the 44.1 standard, they were honoring the sacred, eternal truths discovered by the ancient Mesopotamians.

Yes, the inherent ridiculousness of this as a basis for numerological selection bias should indeed be noted.xoxos wrote:please note that 4 is one of the most ancient numbers.

Some numbers were invented before others. I have heard that the first written investigation of zero was made in 628 A.D. by an Indian called Brahmagupta. By this time, zero was understood to be necessary as a positional placeholder, to make sure other numbers lined up properly. Brahmagupta defined what zero is: 'Zero is the result of subtracting a number from itself' He did not know about dividing by zero though.deastman wrote:Some numbers are more ancient than others? Hmmm... Frantz posted what I wanted to post, grrr.
So I'll go for the smart-arse answer instead: 44.1khz actually has more to do with video than audio...
Besides, 4 is not as ancient (or indeed magic) a number as 3.
