MIDI over Thunderbolt

i would like to send MIDI messages back and forth between 2 macbook pros using a thunderbolt cable. Problem is, i don't have access to these machines (my MB is old, no thunderbolt). So for now i just wanna make sure this is actually possible. Has anybody tried this?

I have to ask - why? CAT 5 cabling is what people usually use. Thunderbolt is still quite new and expensive. Theres no speed improvement for MIDI.
