Why not pick up a copy of FL Studio (formerly Fruity Loops) since you're already somewhat familiar with it?

Demo? I didn't know. I've read today about it here on KVR. Sorry if I've misled you. But, anyway, now you can see what you can get. :)

Oh, no worries. From what I can decipher, it looks pretty nice. Just wish I could change the language settings. My brain is beginning to hurt... hahaha

You could use Google Translate. It is far from perfect, but if you already know a tiny bit of German, it should suffice.
I wish I could sing as well as the voices inside my head...

Going to have to do that, since there doesn't appear to be any other way... lol Thanks, Doc! :)

OR try reaper. way cheap for what you get, and there is a better trial period. bolster it with some of the free plug listed above, and get to know the program. then you can start to look into orchestra plugins later

+1

Paxxis,
I doubt that you can find a good host for free. May be, Podium Free but it seems that the developer of Podium now doesn't pay attention to his product. (And I know nothing about LMMS). More or less good cheap alternatives were listed: Reaper, Magix (or Samplitude) Music Studio, Sonar X3, MuLab, Mixcraft, Tracktion. All of these have their pros and cons. Reaper is a "host only", no advanced instruments, but is cheap, very deep, includes good free plugins and has very-very good demo policy. Tracktion seems to be the one of the same range (may be excluding the demo policy). Music Studio, Sonar X3 include instruments but aren't so good conserning demo policies, etc. And there are many things which won't feet to you (user interface, layout, functionality etc.) Read about them, look at screenshots, prices, upgrade mechanisms, choose one or two variants, downlod the demos and choose the most comfortable variant. I think it's a sole rational way to start.

There are many good free synthesizers and effects, you may not worry, you can do all basic things using the free ones without spending your money. Try save your money here rather than searching for a host.

I'd rather buy Mixcraft or REAPER or whatever than making a German language course, Paxxis...

(But I'm a German, I already know German... :P)

Or try it with LMMS, it's not bad, only the included instruments and effects aren't the best of the world but there are many great free plugins out there.

For example, the ReaPlugs with a great compressor, multiband-compressor, (multiband) EQ, FIR filter and gate (the delay is not so good)!

(And they can even be used in other DAWs!)

Some awesome suggestions here. You guys are awesome, and I thank you for taking the time to answer what I am sure are some very newb questions. Going to be checking out some of these suggestions over the next week or two. Will start off with product demos, and go from there. Hopefully something in English, as I would rather not have to learn (or relearn) another language in the process. lol

Thanks again, folks. You all rock! :D

Honestly I would recommend Propellerheads Reason for this.

You can get a used licence in the KVR market place fairly cheap for around $200 USD. Reason is a incredible learning tool for making music with! I almost always recommend this to people who are interested in computer music production.

It gives you everything you need to get started.

If you have $400 or so burning a hole in your pocket you could always jump on the current offer by Propellerhead and get $400 of REs!

The deal is here https://shop.propellerheads.se/product/reason-8/
