Basically, it feels archaic and it slows down workflow.
Not if you use a multi-client soundcard like Native Instruments Komplete Audio 6. I use ASIO and I never switch to and from any drivers what so ever. I can run several hosts at the same time etc... Only thing is that the clients have to use the same sample rate.
This is really the one issue that tempts me to switch to Mac. It's also something that makes Windows seem very uncool.
No need. Buy a better sound card. ;-)

Not taking external soundcard to cafe with my laptop.

Ok. Sorry I missed that.

This might be a solution though:

or

Routing everything into V.A.S. and then routing V.A.S. to the output.

As for using a separate soundcards, you normally don't take a soundcard along with your laptop to the cafe.

I have no problems doing that. I can have my DAW running playing a vsti while watching a bad sci-fi flick.

Maybe the real problem is a lack of ASIO capable internal soundcards for laptops?

[Pedantic mode on]There is no such thing as a non ASIO capable soundcard, the question is whether there is dedicated ASIO drivers for it or not. Every soundcard will work with the ASIO4ALL driver.[/Pedantic mode off]

Btw, i'd like to try WASAPI. Is there anything i have to do for it to show up in my hosts (Cubase and Wavelab Elements), or is it just not supported in these?

That's a problem of ASIO4All, not ASIO in general. Proper ASIO drivers will let you play non-ASIO sounds at the same time.

But I agree, it does suck that you kinda need to get a dedicated soundcard for low latency audio in Windows. That's certainly one of the main reasons Macs are so popular with musicians, especially when it comes to laptops.

WASAPI is a step in the right direction, but it's still not there yet and it's not supported by many DAWs. Based on my brief testing on an integrated Realtek it also had high RTL. You might think it's because of hardware, but I've tried the same with an experimental Realtek ASIO driver and the latency was way lower.
So I believe most modern integrated sound chips are already capable of low latency audio. What's needed is a good audio driver system and a standards enforcement from MS, making sure hardware manufacturers build to specs if they want to be certified.

"Built in ASIO drivers" suggestion really took off:

ASIO is Steinberg Tech. Why would Ms buy that to use in Windows? Royalties would double the cost of Windows 10. Ms have Wasapi. Im happy with ASIO as it is. If you get a decent soundcard, all is well. For everthing else theres ASIO4ALL. No need to wait for something that will never happen. You might just as well campaign for all DAW makers to fully support WASAPI.

Post

jensa,

VAS looks good, but a MS final solution would be more convenient.

standalone,

Steinberg's multiclient asio driver link isn't working.

chk071,

WASAPI doesn't seem to be popular.

Wasapi isn't great because onboard soundcards aren't stable. The same would apply under asio.

Isn't ASIO royalty free?
I think MS should hire asio4all guy..
BTW, "Built in ASIO drivers" is now #1 most requested of all suggestions:

Thats only around 2000 votes. Very niche. I think ms is looking for much more before they see it as a winner. I double checked and ASIO is indeed royalty free. I'd love to see this happen. Who knows.
