For music DAW machines no, I build my own...even my very 1st DAW machine. I currently use three self built machines in various ways for music.

I do own some store bought PC's made by Dell, HP, Compaq & Gateway, but only have ever been used for home/office computing needs. I've never used them for music.

Been building my own, and production (DAWs) machines for others, for 20+ years. only way to go.

Interesting open cube design Shabdahbriah :)

I'm just thinking that this sub-forum should have a sticky thread for discussion about how to build your own PC best suited for DAW/audio production...

Now there is a sticky thread for selecting the best monitor.

My first PC in 2000 was an Advent AMD machine from PC World. Cost £1000. Used it for 5 years

My second was also an Advent AMD from PC World. Cost £1000. Used it for 7 years, kids used it for another 2.

My third is a non brand AMD machine from a local computer shop. Custom build, just picked the best i could afford at the time. Bought 3 years ago. Cost £400. Still using it.

My fourth is an HP machine. Bought this year. The kids use it. Cost £60, not much lower spec than my own.

I never bought a desktop branded, but always built them by myself, from different parts. It's not really cheaper, but I can get exactly what I want.
Actually at home we have 4 desktops and 3 laptops, only the Laptops are branded Dell, Packard Bell and Toshiba.
You can't always get what you waaaant...

Thanks :) It's actually a bench('marking') stand. I use it for my builds, as it is sooo much easier to trouble shoot, swap-out anything/everything. Then once dialed-in, move it all over to a nice cozy case.

Having worked in the PC industry for the past 15 years, wouldn't buy a 'branded' PC unless it was an asus or toshiba, and then only if it were a laptop, not a desktop.
HP et al skimp on components as much as possible then (bizarrely) overload the machines with bloatware. It's a wonder they're in business, but that's marketing.

i've build mine based on suggestions like this, with hackintosh in mind: http://www.tonymacx86.com/building-cust ... stoMac_Pro

I build my own too, it is really not so difficult nowdays.
Whoever wants music instead of noise, joy instead of pleasure, soul instead of gold, creative work instead of business, passion instead of foolery, finds no home in this trivial world of ours.

I've built most of mine for the last twenty years.
With some advice from this forum on the parts, putting it together is easy.

All of my full size computers that were my own were custom builds. The first was built by a PC builder at a computer show. After that, they were all mine. They were all "floor tops", too, rather than "desktops". :-D Monstrous things...

I'll never build again. Sick to death of it. I want a computing appliance. A quiet and small computing appliance that doesn't need constant fussing or voodoo to make it function.

I've been on MacBooks for some years now. If I can afford it some day, I'll be a Mac Pro owner. That's a big if. But the MacBooks are too small and hot for my music and graphics work.

+1 built my own PC
I would suggest asking for quotes from a few companies after telling them for what you're going to use it and your budget
ask all the components prices, and just choose the best one for you for the price

Agree on picking your own parts of a desktop. Cheaper, more efficient etc.
When I looked for pre-made systems there always seemed to be some culprit, usually a cheap PSU or small SSD.

However, if you know your hardware you can find really good offers for full-builds then strip them and add your own components.
The hope none of te pre-made stuff fails you or you'll probably have some warranty issues.
