S-LAYER is a sample layering sound creation tool that allows you to create, edit and play new sound combinations by taking samples and layering them together using an eight part sampler and an intuitive cell layout.

By combining sounds from the included sample map or your existing sample library, S-LAYER facilitates the discovery of new oneshots, sound effects and loops from pre-existing sample content. Whether you're looking for a new way to create thick drum samples for hip-hop or a massive impact sound effect for game, S-LAYER delivers.

S-Layer is built for Native Instruments Reaktor 5 (Player NOT Supported).

How it works

S-LAYER is a sampler that stores up to 128 pre-recorded sounds or sounds that you load. It can be played via MIDI and/or by using your mouse. It runs inside of Reaktor in either plugin mode or standalone mode.

Each time you play a note on your MIDI keyboard or hit the Trig button, up to eight samples from the sample map will be played back simultaneously. You can randomize or specify which samples play back and then edit each of the layers independently using sliders and toggle controls. Time-tested sound design techniques such as reversing, pitching, modulating and mixing sounds together can be quickly achieved by randomizing and fine-tuning with sliders and knobs.

In addition to the on-board granular, filter and time-based effects, you can also connect your own effects using the insert/send system or by using the direct outputs. Once you've found a sound combination that you like, you can store it on-the-fly in one of eight 'Scenes' which can be dynamically played backed and controlled using MIDI.

Lastly, S-LAYER comes bundled with an iPad Lemur MIDI template by Antonio Blanca and a MIDI template for Native Instruments' Maschine allowing you to remotely control most aspects of the instrument.

Price: $69

hmmm, interestng!!

vurt:
a VERY cool tool.
i play with it now and i highly reccomend it :)
a lot of fun layering various samples/fx and build meta-samples and meta-sounds :)
and you know i dont vouch for many tools.

the videos are kinda confusing for my taste
and it's not cheap.

BUT from my experience, this is the 1st really practical sample layering tool available. and it's solid and well made. and unique. and usable in live acts :)
and creative in its approach. and well documented ++

so - you decide :)

A few quick questions before I buy...

What is the CPU overhead on this like?

Will it map to pads for its scenes inside of maschine easily?

Is the a batch create & export function? Can I export in 16 bit mono for my old hardware samplers or will I need to dither afterwards?

aikighost:

the PDF manual of s-layer is here:

( NON OFICIAL answers )

___What is the CPU overhead on this like?
CPU is around 20 % on this machine
( Quadcore Q9300 at 2.5 ghz )

____Will it map to pads for its scenes inside of maschine easily?

zip comes with:

Maschine Template
Twisted KP Snapshot
iPad Lemur Template

so YES.

____Is the a batch create & export function? Can I export in 16 bit mono for my old hardware samplers or will I need to dither afterwards?

from my knowledge, you can't export easy (the way you want it) from Reaktor and actually thats not the purpose of this tool ! there are lfos/random etc and you can make patches very "alive" and with movement.

if you still want to "freeze" created patches, you could easy record/export them as .wav in tools like:
http://www.xlutop.com/html/chainer.html
http://samplerobot.com/
http://www.renoise.com/
( tools that can automatically render vsti instruments to wav, note by note, and export them with proper names )

you can also use Reaktor's own recorder, trigger and record the patches you like and then ye olde split/copy/paste in any audio editor.

If you want random sfx stretched sample things then this is your tool (yet all the morphing really destroys any nice transients and most things sound very smeared as they are tossed all around the frequency spectrum when pitched wildly up/down and streched) but I am not getting much *practical* sample layering from it as I thought I might. Many of the "kits" seem way too much. The onboard filtering is limited to a HP and LP filter with no bandpass or reject filters. Not sure of the slope on that one either but it seems a steep 24 or 48db/oct) S-layer seems initially more of a sfx or weird warping utility the way I see it so far. Going to dive deeper into the manual tomorrow. I HOPE I can get more control over what's coming out of it. Let's hear anyone else's experiences? How are you doing with drum layering for example?

Approaching from an electro-acoustic standpoint, I have been amazed at S-Layer's deepness and capabilities apart from it's amazing single-shot layering talents.

Working with longer samples and sustained triggering, S-Layer becomes a tool capable of incredible dimension.

Using the 'Wrapper' functions as a realtime mixer is allowing some genuinely exciting prospects to not only become possible, but amazingly accessible and friendly from both a compositional and performance perspective. A distinctive advantage of mixing via 'Wrappers' is the ability to systematically and progressive 'morph' the active layers over an entire composition under systematic design of the music space that under any other system would be unwieldy.

Unbelievably (well, not really knowing Twisted Tools), each time I make a lateral and deep turn into a idea space inspired from the presented tool set (and thinking I will finally hit S-Layer's parameter limits), I am pleasantly surprised to find TT has already been there first and made it a welcome place in which to pursue all the imagined possibilities.

I am incredibly excited at this point, this may become the tool that finally fills the conceptual gaps in design, implementation, and physical ability I have been lacking/needing to explore the decidedly more 'modernist' ideas that seem to be my inspiration these days (Mark Fell, Evol, Akos Rozman, Mats Linstrom, John Wall, Oneohtrix, Actress, Burial…to name just a few of the many 'underground?' and adventurous electronic explorers that are straddling both the legacy and cutting edge of digital/analog conceptions).

Well done Twisted Tools, this promises to be a tool worth many years of creative investment ;-)

So I can use my longer samples.
How long is long?
Can drag and drop the samples into place into S-layer
or must first build a library of samples (128 max.)
Can audio output be saved in S-layer or must be recorded in the DAW?

I wonder if there is a Version 2 forthcoming.
I have Reaktor but is there a VST version in the works?
Seems a bit expen$ive. No?

Is there an alternative to S-Layer?

Ok, I searched and got some of the answers:

Yes can you use long samples but how long I am still not sure and less sure if I ever need to use extra long samples over I minute in length.

Cannot drag and drop the samples into place into S-layer
must first build a library of audio samples (128 max.)

Yes I believe that the audio output can be saved in S-layer or can be recorded in the DAW.

I wonder if there is a Version 2 forthcoming. This is probably a top secret however if a informed person can divulge this bit of information here and I will not tell anyone.
Also will be great to know if a VST version in the works.

Is there an alternative to S-Layer? This would be an important bit of info to have!

I am continuing to be interested on the S-Layer.

A new question just came up but could not find help.
Can the my samples be in stereo?
Is the output of S-Layer in stereo?

I checked out a couple of videos but they mostly show off percussion sounds S-Layer generates. I am wondering however if using non-percussive longer symphonic samples I can get a more original/odd/weird musical sounds.

This was a necro thread - the product isn't really that new, is it? So I guess most users have been happily using it for three years now, and are busy discovering new shiny toys instead of still watching old threads. Might explain the silence...

That said, Twisted Tools stuff is fantastic, but it definitely needs to fit your work flow and mind-set. (Just before somebody flames me: I am a Twisted Tools user myself...)
