Syntilla wrote:In the VST world, legends don't come much more legendary than David Haupt. His modules have graced some (most?) of the most iconic synths of the digital era, and his co-authored SE book has been the launch-pad for many a developer - pro and dabbler alike (we salute you, one and all!).
But anyone visiting his domain since around January will have been greeted with either the dreaded '404' or the following message:

"The DE Haupt SynthEdit Web site has become outdated, and is no longer available.
Many thanks to all who have supported it over the years! "

All is not lost, though - the site has been well archived on WayBack:
https://web.archive.org/web/20120501023 ... index.html
The modules themselves have long been set free, and will remain an essential resource for as long as musicians continue to use 32-bit (and I don't think there are many browsing this thread who are in any great rush to change).

And his demo VSTIs (in case you thought I was going too OT) have an old-time charm all their own.
Be absolutely sure to download his MatrixPak:
https://web.archive.org/web/20120429080 ... rixPak.htm
Not only is it behind some of my all time favourite synths (I can't resist an EMS-style matrix!), but also the .zip contains the irresistible (if somewhat prosaically named) DH_MatrixDemo - you really don't want to miss it!
He gave all his modules away for free recently and now this, I bought Synthedit in december
and went to his website and downloaded all the downloads and the key file and backed
it up but now if I lost these files I can't get them back, your wayback link is from 2012 and
he gave all away in 2014. All is lost.

Aside from a brief encounter with PureData a dozen or more years back, my familiarity with Max is pretty much zero - so apologies in advance if this post veers too much off topic.

Couprie's Le synthé used to be payware, but was set free a few years back:
http://logiciels.pierrecouprie.fr/?page_id=387
It requires the (free) Max runtime.
It's mainly notable for the sampled VCS3 oscillators, which really put the 'stunning' authenticity of some other clones in question. (Kalensky, of course, pretty much nails it - but to call his X16 a Synthi clone would be doing both instruments a disservice.)
Otherwise maybe not one of the best, but it does capture much of the spirit of the original instruments and doesn't try to pretend they were some kind of 80s' polysynth.
This version - V5 - is standalone, but I'm quite certain there were earlier VSTi versions. Can anyone provide a (reputable) link for any of them?

Sticking with Max ...
... (actually, come to think of it, didn't there used to be some kind of wrapper that turned them into VSTs ... or did I dream that?) ...
... after posting (previous page) about the TC patches for Brooks's VCS5 (I'm nothing if not a free-associator) I stumbled across these videos of Mr. C. himself:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0shwbPK7e2g#t=16
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=drH7lgzk6bM

The rainbow keyboard is his fire-damaged CS5.
The modular box behind is an early model (only around 200 manufactured) EML Electrocomp 200 ... the only (publicly available) software version I know of being here:
https://cycling74.com/project/eml-200-m ... sequencer/
Max, again.
I haven't, personally, been able to get any sound out of it (a bit of a drawback, I guess), though otherwise it appears to be functioning: maybe some of you will have more luck (and I'll certainly be trying again).
Like the original, this was built mainly for educational purposes - Vassar, in this case, rather than Connecticut schoolkids.
The lack of EML emulations in software is probably due largely to two reasons: not much of a 'market' (you don't see a lot of Buchla stuff, for the same reason); and for what it does, the oft-cloned Arps (which actually came later) cover much the same ground (and arguably better).
So why should you be interested?
Take a look at what Allen Ravenstine (Pere Ubu) is up to in this long edit from the 'I Dream of Wires' documentary:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSBYPHWka_E
And if you want to know more, the product page for the diminutive hardware clone (priced almost low enough to tempt some of us freebie hunters!) http://www.electronicmusicworks.com/syn ... w-200.html will tell you everything you need - in a fraction of the time it would take you to plough through the manual (exellent though it is): https://archive.org/details/synthmanual ... ers-manual

[EDIT May 31]
The Max 200 emu is now running for me ...
Couprie's Synthé had been working fine for years with the Max 5 runtime (on a P4/XP, no less), but it appears the 200 requires at least Max v6 - which is still free (and still runs on XP!).
I also had to copy the three .svg files from the 'media' folder to 'patchers'.
After that, just double-click 'EML_rev1.maxpat'.
There's a bunch of presets in the 'data' folder to get you started.
I haven't even started looking at the Moog 960 sequencer that's included - the synth itself has proved far too absorbing to leave me the time.
Top emulation - highly recommended.
(I'm guessing Vassar is what we in the UK would call 'red brick' ?)
