Anyone tried one?
Here's my experience of trying out a simple cheap Windows 8.1 tablet with a DAW.

And mind you this is worst of the worst, cheapest of the cheap tablet. Costs just 59.90€

Edit: Removed the Diva test as it was not playing without dropouts. Didn't notice that at first.

Yeah I've been using my Dell Venue Pro 8 for learning the One Synth Challenge synth of the month when I'm on the go, for some time now. Works great in the free version of Live 8 SE I have, whose 4-vst limit is well suited to the tablet's Atom CPU. Ran Hive very well; as well as Dexed, Charlatan 2, and older synths like PolyIblit. The only real catch is that knobs and buttons are often hard to operate with just touch, so it's not particularly good for detailed work. Hive's probably the most touch-friendly synth I've thrown at it.

I have a surface pro v1 and while it runs the programs ok (ableton live) my main grip is that it only has 1 USB port, so I can't use interface and controller at the same time, and I don't like hubs for connecting audio interfaces.
The Surface Pro v1 was good enough (given it's size) for some audio tasks I suppose new ones are quite capable.

I've run Live, Tracktion 4 and Reaper all fine on a Toshiba.. encore(?), baytrail cpu with 2GB RAM.
Though all kind of unusable using touch though Lives scaling helps a lot. I plan on creating a stupidly large Reaper theme purely so I can use the tablet as a simple portastudio. Reapers plugins work quite well with touch (all sliders, no knobs)
Got my old Tascam interface working fine too, had to mess around with the drivers a bit (compatibility and all that) but pretty painless. But as rod_zero says, one usb port is a pain, especially when it's the power socket too.

I guess that tablets with Windows 8.1 classify as computers (which is fair, if compared with iOS or Android)mkdr wrote:Who moved this?

I don't think performance will be an issue anymore in the foreseeable future either. The next Intel SoC generation will supposedly already be much more powerful than what is on the market now. Actually Microsoft will have a good hand with their approach to bring the same OS to desktop and touch devices. Pretty sure they will get a decent market share on the handheld device market too very soon.

when you've stopped frothing at the mouth at the mere hint of the possibility that you can vent some of your sneering anti-apple rhetoric, you might pause to note that i made no mention of an ipad, ios, nor indeed any other mobile devicefmr wrote:Oh really? So, what "tablet" were you referring, then? And why? (glad to know that "tablet" is no longer a "mobile device")el-bo (formerly ebow) wrote: when you've stopped frothing at the mouth at the mere hint of the possibility that you can vent some of your sneering anti-apple rhetoric, you might pause to note that i made no mention of an ipad, ios, nor indeed any other mobile device

Yes my point was exactly that. There are no issues. It's perfect. I can finally run a proper Daw on a mobile device. I could never achieve that with my iPad4.el-bo (formerly ebow) wrote:having the software RUN on a tablet is really not the issuemkdr wrote:Anyone tried one?
