Another thing Worth mentioning is that I often mix using quite low sound level. Despite that I use a pair of 8-inch monitors in a small room. Using low sound level will also help to reduce reflections. If you have the monitors closer to where you sit, as is the common case if you have a small room, you can reduce the level quite much and still hear the Music in detail. So it's not all about what you use but how you use it.

Yes, I mentioned this earlier, it also helps your speakers cleanly reproduce the bass that you can hear, and, it helps to reduce listener fatigue.
