Hi-gain guitar noise gate via generic gate/expander

I'm trying to recreate a dedicated noise gate for hi-gain guitar sound (notably Boss NS-2 and MXR Smart Gate) with generic gate/expander (VST or DAW built-in), but I wasn't happy enough with prior results
I assume that guitar noise gate can be replicated with generic gate effect. What are the recommended ranges for gate controls (attack, release, hold)? Is auto-release any good? What's about sidechain EQ?
Is there something in good guitar noise gates that makes them special, like envelope?

I would suggest you try Gatey Watey from Boz Digital Labs. I don't own this one myself but I have several of their other plugins and they're all top-notch.

There’s also the gate in SoftAmp AXP’s Sans Amp emulation, which is free.

You can download a free version of PODFarm from line 6 that has their noise gate in it. Its the only gate i use for guitars. Other than that, the dead duck free effects bundle has a really good gate in it.

I'd probably would, but the question is primarily about gate VST settings.nilhartman wrote:Have you given DMG Audio's TrackGate a try?
