Hi,

I am looking for a desk for music composing/producing.
Something extremely simple actually, but still hard to find.
In fact I'd be looking for a regular "office" desk but with the tray for the music keyboard (49 keys). no rack space, nothing else.
Something pretty much like the Zaor Misa Jr, to be clear ... but possibly shorter, as I am willing to put the speakers on ground stands and not on the desk.
any links? hints?
thanks!

Build one? Ikea table + tray?

Might not be the answer you want, but after shopping around for a desk that fit my needs (and being overwhelmed by the prices of even the simple ones), I decided to build my own. It was a fun project, ran me less than $100, and I learned a thing or two in the process. Now I have a desk the size of an upright piano, with an 88 key controller built in, and room for my two computer monitors and two KRK monitors. Plus it's got a couple "wall-mount" guitar holders built in so I can sit a guitar down next to me, and a couple coat hooks for hanging headphones on the side. Plus, if my setup changes, I can easily take it apart and adjust it to fit whatever my needs are.

You can also check out the "Work Station" section of Ikea Hackers for inspiration.

Hello to both,

thanks, I was anticipating replies like that; they just make sense.
I'm just not sure how to build the tray myself .. And giving the desk a clean look either.
Even if it's home and not studio, I don't want it to look too DIY ..

No problem, it can be intimidating but it's pretty straightforward. A table is a flat surface with perpendicular legs, it doesn't get any simpler in terms of joints. If you find a suitable table surface at Ikea, you can mix and match legs and they supply all the necessary hardware. I've got a black desk with red legs myself, a super-clean and striking look.

You may want to borrow/rent a drill to speed things up, but the table legs I got came with self-tapping screws. You can see the instructions here require nothing more than a screwdriver: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/assembly_inst ... -4_pub.pdf

You could also get a drawer unit(s) and simply sit the table on it, but I'm thinking you want a cleaner look down there.

So figure out what size of surface you want, and how tall it needs to be. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/categ ... ces/10712/ Consider adjustable legs if you're not sure about future height adjustments.

As for a tray you can do it a couple ways. There are lots of third-party under-table shelf systems. It depends if you want it static or adjustable. But basically you'll be placing more screws on the underside of the table. Again, nothing but a screwdriver if there are self-tapping screws.

Take a look at this blog entry: http://www.yellowbrickhome.com/2012/07/ ... nsive-diy/

Person got Home Depot to cut them wood to size, they painted it, and mounted it on sliding rails. You don't even have to paint it you prefer a bare look and you got nice-looking wood. Or if you want to throw more money at the problem, get a pull-out tray nearly assembled (check dimensions of your keyboard): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01IIGMBVI/

The thing with highly-designed furniture is that you're paying for the form in addition to function. If you want to pay for a design, there's no such thing as a deal since you've already signalled you're willing to pay for such things. Even the POANG chair is expensive by Ikea standards. But a little bit of work can save a lot of money, and a table is one of those things within easy reach.

Geekdesk, it has a nice finish to it, and can stand etc. Great for when you're feeling it and want to groove a little while you create.
