Ideal software for working "in" a sound

I may be over-reaching here, but I'm growing a little tired/uninspired with cobbling together modular software devices and creating unwieldy CPU-eating machines.
Ideally, what I would like is to find an application that allows me to transform sound in a more direct manner.
TBH, I don't have too much experience with audio editors outside of GoldWave and Audacity; maybe I need to spend more time with them. That being said, does anyone have any recommendations for software that would allow me to really dig into a sound and alter it in a multitude of ways - bonus points if it has the ability to generate sounds as well.
Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Alchemy is great at this. If you are on PC you'd need to find it used, if you use a Mac and don't mind splashing a few dollars on Mainstage, you can get Alchemy V2 which has some great new options. The way you can go from addtive, spectral, granular, morphing, FM, PM, VA, all in one preset is still unique.
Otherwise, have a look at Iris too. You can zoom in on imported audio and manipulate it.
If you'd like to experiment with re-synthesis (which is always a great way to get 'inside' the sound) then have a look at Image Line 'Harmor'. It's resynthesis is even better than Alchemy's.
Otherwise try some spectral plugins like the GRM tools or Michael Norris free spectral plugins (Mac only).
I usually like a combination of tools for tasks you outline in the opening post. One new toy that I like is Fog Convolver, which is an IR reverb with some great impulse responses which together with the easy to use engine can give some amazing new sounds.

OnePingOnly !! That, together with the anechoic room simulator works wonders on audio warping.
We are the KVR collective. Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated.

Thank you for all of the suggestions, even the ubiquitous OPO.
I should have mentioned that I'm on PC, so Metasynth is out for me; however, I will check out some of the other suggestions.
Thanks again!

Iris and Virsyn Poseidon are both great for exploring the internal landscape of a sound
