Thanks again guys for all your input!
I am just asking myself .. with all these billions and billions and billions of formats, all those samplers inside each of every DAW out there ... if it wouldn't make sense for a potential buyer just to have a stripped down "audio loops only" packages available!
What do you think?

late to the party but here it is:
kontakt, live, nn-xt, uvi player, sforzando, TAl sampler
TAL sampler has a unique retro sound because of wonderfully-modelled converters.
No, I would not be interested in loops (or wavs). I have bought numerous
libraries in the above formats (and SF2) instead over the years.

New Sonic Arts' Nuance is another sampler that supports import/export of SFZ format and can import Logic EXS

"Audio loops only" are not elegantly usable in a song. BecauseWaywyn wrote:Thanks again guys for all your input!

in 99.9% they don't fit. So I think "loops" are not a good idea.
Instead the solution will be just "wavs" only. This would
open the ability to map these wavs for any format that is
needed.
Though one format tends to be a "hidden unofficial standard".
And that is not NKI, because that is "proprietary": Only with
the newast Kontakt you'll be able to use it.
But it is "sfz". It is an "open format"! An sfz-file can be edited
with every text-editor, it is very flexible, and though it has all
the abilities and features that are needed. Thus the combination
of "wav" and "sfz" is the most flexible and open solution at all.

With the right tools and skill set this is actually a viable option these days as 'loops' no longer need to be static recordings.Waywyn wrote:Thanks again guys for all your input!

We're no longer limited to just chopping and rearranging the contents of a loop.
With the advanced time stretching and pitch shifting capabilities of tools such as Melodyne every note can be crafted.
I suppose it depends on the music you make and the compromise youre willing to take as these tools arent yet perfect and introduce unwanted artifacts.

"sfz" that he is referring to is not a sampler, but rather it is an open sample format that uses wavs, along with a .sfz text file that defines how the wavs are to be played.Waywyn wrote:Thanks for your input. "sfz" format support can be implemented by the developer of any sampler.
A good example of a free sample player that is based on this format is the Plogue sforzando. https://www.plogue.com/products/sforzando.html

Thank you, ... well yes, I am aware of the sfz format, but was just referring to Sforzando since it was the most mentioned sfz player. Is there a good source on basic commands or is anyone fond here of programming for sfz format?zzz00m wrote:"sfz" that he is referring to is not a sampler, but rather it is an open sample format that uses wavs, along with a .sfz text file that defines how the wavs are to be played.Waywyn wrote:Thanks for your input. Well as far as I know, sfz is the primary non-proprietary sample format. Not sure how popular it is overall, but it is accessible to anyone.Waywyn wrote:Thank you, ... well yes, I am aware of the sfz format, but was just referring to Sforzando since it was the most mentioned sfz player. Besides sforzando (based on ARIA), the commercial Garritan ARIA Player is also sfz based. https://www.garritan.com/products/perso ... ia-player/
Also, a number of Cakewalk software instruments were sfz based, including Dimension Pro and Rapture.

Yeah, it can do loops. I've used loops for infinite sustain instruments, but it is also possible to define multiple loop regions per file, though I haven't tried how that would actually work for defining loop splices etc.

Thanks! The info I didn't find so far if e.g. Sforzando is able to stretch the file according to the sequencers tempo?DSmolken wrote:Yeah, it can do loops. No, that's not possible.Waywyn wrote: ... if e.g. Sforzando is able to stretch the file according to the sequencers tempo?
"Stretching a file according to the sequencers tempo" is not a typical function
of a sampler. A sampler does exactly the opposite: "Pitching a file according to the
key you pressed".
"Stretching a file according to the sequencers tempo" is automatically done by
DAWS like Bitwig, Ableton, Reaper, ...
Sforzando can do all the things a Sampler must be able to do: Pitching according
to the key, Grouping, Multisamples, Muliti-velocities, Velo-Crossfades, Key-
Crossfades, Round-Robin, Keyswitch-selection (and many many more).

Well, host tempo is one of the available extended CCs, and I guess that could be used to modulate the sample pitch, but yeah, that's probably better done at the DAW level in most cases.
Also not supported, and possibly important in these cases: pitch-preserving time stretching.
