You can definitely do it with Codeweaver's Crossover.

Yeah, but you need the Windows-on-ARM versions of the Windows executables you want to run.

Wine and variants do not do CPU emulation.

I just opened Excel 2010 in CrossOver on an M1. So I should believe you instead of my lying eyes when you're telling me that's either the ARM version of Office 2010 or it won't open?

It's hit & miss what does work and getting audio +/- MIDI requires some next level debugging. Maybe the CPU architecture is the root cause of the problems I see ... but also not clear it has anything to do with the CPU architecture. Audio on Windows is just fraught!

[EDIT: I just got Kontakt 1.5.3 for Windows working in crossover, because it appears to support direct sound through the Crossover driver. The problems I'm seeing all seem to be with audio applications for windows that require ASIO. For all the complaining that I hear about Macs, CoreAudio just works. None of this ASIO b.s.]

I use CrossOver on an M1 to run legacy Roland device editors. Works a treat. Even recognizes MIDI ports from macOS.

In my experience, Crossover doesn't work super well in many use cases for audio Windows apps on Mac - e.g. Audiogridder.

The alternative is to run a full Windows installation in a VM. UTM is a great (free & open source) option - https://github.com/utmapp/UTM

On M1 Macs, it'll run Windows 11 for ARM, which runs at near-native speed (no emulation).

A bit surprised no one has mentioned parallels as an option as well.

Parallels works great too, and graphically things are way smoother with Parallels, but UTM is free & open source.
