Two Sine Oscillators Fming (feedback loop)

For fun, I created similar cross modulation patches in Multiphonics CV-2, Reaktor (using blocks from the Atomic pack), Softube Modular (A-110), Solo Rack (S310), and VAZ modular (OscD). Reaktor was running at 192Khz. Seems like the Atomic pack modules wouldn't run when it was set higher than 192Khz. Solo Rack was set to 16x oversampling. Sample rate of the project was 96Khz.

The patch was basically two sine oscillators (osc) fming each other. The first part of the recording is the fm depth of the first osc increasing with the fm depth of the second osc at zero. The second part is the fm depth of the second osc increasing while fm depth of the first decreases. I used the same automation envelopes across all the synths.

Haha, thanks for sharing! There's something to like about each of these, do you have a favorite? The Reaktor ones really get out there, and to my ears VAZ is the "purest"...I first discovered cross-mod using VAZ Modular and actually use Multiphonics standalone more than any other modular instrument/environment these days.

No problem. Can't say I have a favorite, but Multiphonics and Reaktor are cool because use linear fm through zero. But Solo and Softube are interesting because of how wacky they sound without breaking up. I think the breakup mostly has to do with maximum fm depth. It seems the Atomic pack VCO has an inherently high maximum fm depth while the others are a little more sane.

While I really like VAZ, I had to boost the OscD by about 16dBs to get the tame effect (relative to the others) I recorded. It certainly is capable (especially considering its age) but extreme audio rate cross-mod might not be its strong suit.
