Baniev: You are right that Hallucinogen makes the best Goa/Psy ever made. That's probably why none of us can tell you how to do it. He's just a tad better than the rest of us.....talented bastard. :x

Wow, why even have a forum? You could just start sending random emails to people on the internet trying to insult them. This might provide enjoyment for you.

Baniev - Posford uses (what looks like) a Korg MS-2000 for a lot of his stuff. I've seen him live and it's been one of the only things on stage. I've also heard he is (or was) into the high end Eventide reverb units, which is probably a part of that lush Shpongle sound. He used to have a webpage up (I think linked off shpongle.com) detailing a bunch of his equipment, but I can't seem to find it anymore.

If you ask around at the twisted forums (http://twisted.co.uk/forum/) you might get a more current update on what he's using.

Honestly, though, you could probably give him some generic free synth and a couple drum samples, leave him in a room for a week, and come back and hear some pretty creative stuff.

Ahh, found a cached copy (sans pictures, unfortunately) of the webpage I was thinking about:

Oh i produced tracks that were pretty close to his stuff but were to linear, man in any forum, everywhere they say hallucinogen is the best, so much people say simon is a God or call him simon godford but it is true, anything he touches is great, just look at some Infinity project tracks or the Space tribe hallucinogen collaborations, if Simon is together with another artist the music sounds better than the music of the artist alone :-o .

He uses mostly outboard gear. There used to be a site with great pictures of his studio and gear and lots of info about how he recorded the first shpongle album, including references to specific synths and effects he used on certain tracks. Unfortunately, I can't find it anywhere. I think it must have been taken down. I did find this list on another cached page though:

Gear & Software

The brain unit:
Mac G3 266Mhz
PC Pentium 800Mhz
Korg 12/12 soundcard
Gina soundcard
Logic Audio Platinum
Mackie 32*8 bus mixing desk
Mackie HR824 monitor

The keyboards unit:
Kurzweil K2000
Korg MS20
Korg MS50
Roland SH101
Roland Juno106
ARP 2600
Oscar
Prophet 5

The digital unit :
Akai S3200
Akai CD3000
Akai DR16
Fostex D-5
Tascam mx2424

The effects unit :
TC M2000
Zoom
Behringer intelligate
Alesis Quadraverb
Drawmer Gate
Bel Flanger
Ensoniq DP/4
Eventide DSP4000
Eventide Harmonizer
AMS dm 2-80
TC Electronic
Smalltone Phaser

Shpongle is what got me into electronic music years ago. Great stuff! Most of his techniques can be achieved now with software. He is very fond of rhythmic gating, and nobody elses gates sound quite like his. I think that old drawmer gate he's got has a lot of character to it. Good luck.

EDIT: It looks like Grimes already found that page I was talking about. Too bad the pictures are down.

I almost forgot, Simon was getting a lot of crap on some bbs a while back for using a lot of really obvious unaltered samples from spectrasonics sample cds. If you listen to the audio demos on the spectrasonics website, you'll hear a couple obvious samples he used on some shpongle stuff IN THE FREAKING DEMOS! I don't care though. It kinda makes it cheasy, but he still used them well.

You should do some research into the ongoing saga of Baniev, and his prior antics, before you go jumping to such conclusions.

I doubt you'll be able to emulate his sound just by using same kind of gear that he does. My advice is to listen and try to understand exactly what he is doing instead of which synths/effects he uses.
Then again, you could just do your own stuff and make it sound as original and distinctive as you can, so maybe someday people will be asking about your production style on forums... it's not that easy though, I know.
