I love the word DAW as does donks - that's why he asked the question so it could be repeated again and again...

Having a non-connected computer makes it very complicated to download updates, activate software, and post to kvr!

If you know a bit how the computer works, you can easily avoid most of the crap out there. But you guys are smart. You don't know how many people are currently wondering why their home-page always change to a porn site, and why casino popups shows up when they connect. And why their computer takes minutes to boot up.

What I can say is, it is very feasable and practical to have a do-it-all computer. But you got to follow the rules.

(And for those running Win98, you just don't help the software developers out-there. Wondering why Cubase SX didn't initialy release for 98? Because it would have take a few more months of development just to "make it work under 98". Instead, they have concentrated on nice features. Please, stop using it! Windows XP is not slower, it just requires more memory. It's actually faster, for the same processor speed, with enough memory.)
Ahh, cheers!

I agree, today, I don't see any reason of not being connected to the internet.

A studio is a controlled environment, a professional environment. And since you have a Firewall, that's good! You are protected.

My article is more targeted to home users. (home studio?)

If you have a family computer, if your kids and your wife are using the computer, you have far more risk of being infected with viruses and spyware.

As my primary work, I am a senior developer in a software company (15 developers), and we build security software (firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware, cookie management, privacy) for home users. We have about 300,000 users in Canada.

first off, i think your article is a good one and very helpful to a lot of people. oh, and i'm not a dev, so my thoughts are just based on experience here. but, aren't companies at more risk than the home computer? just seems most viruses and spyware at the home is just the ignorance (NOT all the time, but some) of the user. you know, a person opening "that" attachment or not knowing how to deal with 20 pop up screens at once. the "big dogs" go after the companies and government agencies right? just my opinion.

Some viruses like Sasser and Nachi, reproduce themself without the help of email. Just having your computer connected with no Firewall is enough to get the virus. The virus uses holes in the operating system to enter the computer. (Using buffer overrun tricks). Even the techies that we are could get it. If you haven't updated your Windows for a while, and you don't have a Firewall, you probably have it.

Here is my setup I'm very happy with:

Dual boot:
1st system - WinXP with office, internet, e-mail, antivirus, spyware blaster, etc. etc.
2nd system - DAW - WinXP cleanest possible installation, just Nuendo, Wavelab, Cooledit, VST's and M-audio control panel :) .. no other bulls..t
Each system is on its separate partition.

Exactly my point and the same applies to xp! its full of holes.
I didnt say not connected to the internet, i said uses another machine.
You should read some of the other threads on this forum. "Help the developers and please stop using win98" :x Even microsoft have done a "tony" and are now supporting 98 again.
Now where was that thread about cubase sx freezing up!

fake
You cant beat people up then have them say "I love you"

So why should I stop using Win98? Because I have to get Cubase SX and therefore XP? Errrrr...I'm quite happy with Cubase5.1 thanks - I don't need to upgrade anything if I don't want, for the simple reason that every piece of s/w I've bought to run on Win98 and Cubase5.1 still do exactly the same job that I bought them for. And will continue to do so until the day my PC dies or I get a faster one. In which case I might even continue with 5.1 and Win98 on the newer PC.

Sure, when SX has just a few more facilities that I want, then I'll seriously consider upgrading everything.....but it still surprises me how many people fall into the consumer trap of needing to upgrade constantly when what they've already got works fine.

And as for viruses/worms etc - am I completley mad, or haven't there been worms that got into XP machines only - that didn't infect 98 systems? That actually confirmed to me that I don't need to upgrade anything yet.

I also don't have my music PC connected to the net...problem solved I'd say. I use the other cheap PC to d/l with protection, scanning etc etc before I even consider networking things across to my very safe and well-oiled machine that AFAIK has never been infected with anything apart from the odd beer/wine spillage  (and maybe a good dose of fag-ash)  .

No one has mentioned, which I find quite odd, how a good polishing with beeswax cleans up a personal computer to a high sheen.
