..or just go direct to the synths.
Reason I ask is that I'm about to release a free bank of 32, and want to know whether I need bother assigning the knobs in the Cell panel (aside from the mixer) or not.

The knobs/sliders on the front are very useful, specially if you have a generic controller.

OK, but do you use the assignations as set by the preset author, or end up changing them to suit your needs? If the latter, then there's no real need for me to assign them.
Also, aside from cut-offs/resonance, do you have preferences for other settings
(effect wet/dry, Osc octave...??)
