What are some good Vst's for creating drum loops and glitchy idm sounds like heard on aphex twins songs?

Post

Well, the trick to the sound, not that there is any one trick mind you, is not in the instrument, but rather the techniques they use to slice and dice and arrange. There are a myriad effects and instruments, but how they are used together create the sound, not just an instrument. You probably all ready know this, but that's a long way of saying - there aren't any.

But here are some individual pieces that, if used together, could put you in the ballpark:
A good sampler - shortcircuit is now free and excellent.
A good spectral fx - dstblk is amazing and free
A good drum synth - Drumatic by ephonic can make any synthetic drum you will need.
Also look for some good filters: Frohmage by ophmforce is good and free.
Don't forget a good delay - again ephonic makes a good retro delay unit, though I prefer FabFilter's timeless. (Payware)
What you really need though, is to learn all the automation tricks in your host.
oh, and some loops if you like. I've never bought a sample cd because there's so much great stuff available for free if you poke around.

Hope that helps!

really nices ones !!!

...don't forget dBlue Glitch

http://illformed.org/blog/glitch/

it's an MultiEffect unit with a sequencer...

some people don't like it because it's really great all by it self but if you take yourt time to actually program the effects...it's so much better !!!

i believe you are going to love Glitch...it's extra nice for IDM and Aphex Twin style...

i would also recommend Element of Surprise from Ugo since it has some pretty IDM keys comming out of it's random preset generator engine...

also maybe ARCADE 2.1 sample folder animator from Michael Benjamin

http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic ... 94#3054394

this thing is good for randoms inspiration sounds from samples

and last but not least i would also check the other VSTi by this dev

DMU SINUS !!!

http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic ... 33#3054133

it's a sine synth only...not glitchy at all but i tell you...it's one of my favourites !!!

aaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh....i almost forgot !!!

check some of the De La Mancha plugs !!!

go for BENT and FREQ SHOW....and check the others...they are really cool

and free... (some of them are payware but really cheap for the nice plug you get !)

A solid foundation to work from IS key for anything and ouroboros has provided you with an excellent reply regarding this question, PrplHayes...

that said- I'll proceed to open Pandora's box even further and possibly muddy the waters in the process :D ...
(here is a list of more tools that may come in handy...but mind you- they ARE only tools )

shuriken's copyshop, Kerrstin, mdsp's livecut, bram's suppaTrigga, Dblue's glitch, any number of xoxos' creations (try gum and steps ;) ), ndc's buffer synth, majken's disorder, Spyro's mincer, Livelab.dk's Liveslice, Az Audio's Ultratrigger FX, SugarBytes Effectrix and Artillery 2, Audio Damage's Replicant, Steve Duda's minion, any number of Darkware/Novuzeit fx, any number of dover fx, liquidclear fx, coFX, de la mancha fx, arcDev's Cyclotron 2, betabug's GetaBlitch Jr, Stylus RMX, Phutboy Slim, Ugo's Disturbance (!!!), GURU, Ableton Live, Energy XT... the list goes on and on....

I'm certain I've left off some obvious candidates for beat destruction, but don't be bound by the intent or the original purpose of an effect. While some may be specifically designed for such purpose, pretty much ANY effect can be turned into a tool of beat destruction 8)

[edit: Kloz (who hit submit a wee bit before me  ) provides some good ones as well!]

Yeah, no tricks, but there are alot of ways to do it.

I purchased a korg M3, and honestly I started subbing drums for instruments and the reverse. I've found alot of bizzare karma midi performances, that are basically AUTO APHEX, you could buy an M3, there are some Karma version 2 midi performances, that you can dig out, that will let you have some amazing drum performances, if you pick the right ones, and obviously up the BPM.

Same thing goes for subbing synths for the drums, and editing the Karma Midi performances so that it's in key.

Newest method I've found.

I have an ASR-88, if you find a cheap ASR-10, and you like Glitch, the ASR-10 has a transwave function, now the actual transwave function in name sucks, but in reality there is a loop-x feature which actually drags the transwave function out of the machine. If you set the LFO to NOT be controlled by the mod wheel, asign the modwheel to 100% control the loop -x function, it's once again, stutter stagger auto glitch.

Another thing about he ASR, is that there is an interesting mistake in the system, it's either a mistake, or just a random feature that I found that they don't really list in the manual....

Take a LARGE sample of ANYTHING, like a string ensemble say 30 seconds long. Resample it. Set the start of the sample at zero as you would normally, but, set the loop point anywhere you choose, so, set the start at say %40 of the wave, but also set the END of the loop at %40 or %41, the ASR loses it's mind.

It loops the whole sample once surprisinglyl, then it skips, staggers, stutters, repeats, clicks, in random places all over the sample, it's actually a true Glitch in meaning, and also what real glitch music started as, finding mistakes in hardware, and using them to compose, the ASR-10 was so advanced for it's time, it will resample, which you need to do to get a pure wave with effects. So when you do set the loop points to zero, you can also use effects on it like the tape delay effect(it's effects are still some of the best I've ever heard), so that's how you make an ASR-10 "glitch", I'm sure most Hardware has hidden little things in it that are just "side effects" of it's OS, that were never intended to be used, but finding those hidden gltiches in hardware, is how glitch started.

Ok, so another way OBVIOUSLY is GRAIN SYNTHESIS yay....

You can put a drum loop through reaktors many types of granular oscilators/effects, etc.

Granular synthesis, when assigned a LIVE realtime controller can give you glitch, and stutter type drums.

So, ok, great, we have glitch, and some drums.

But honestly, to get perfect Aphex type drums(and you are not going to like this), is to sit there in from of your software sequencer, and program the entire song, it's tedious, takes forever, and can drive one crazy.

BUT, here is one thing that helps:

Take ONE bar, and fill it full of like 128th, notes if your sequencer will let you do it. Just take one bar, and fill it full of at least 64th notes.

So now you have a "template", and one bar is all it takes.

after you just make one stupid easy template full of fast tiny notes, you can copy paste that bar all over the place, and DELETE notes in it selectively, so there you have, AUTO APHEX, richard james.

With one template, you can obviously copy paste it to infinity, and also copy it to differen tracks, or assigned multiple outs if your vsti drum program lets you.

That spares you the "crazy" of tryiing to write a six mintue song at 160 bpm, and having to midi poke drums each time you make a new track.

All it takes is one bar, and selective deleting.

After that, you can run it through filters, add effects, eq, eq and filters, on your template are a big part of the sound, just machine gun speed drums doesn't really get you there, but a filter lowpass usually, either done in realtime, or midi automation in your sequencer, DOES get you to the Aphex drums, and it's not that hard, after one template.

A third way, is to take something like reaktor, and use one of it's many AMAZING drum machines.

Use limelite, it's the best damn drum machine on the planet, it has so many features, it has randimzation, TONS off effects, that are controlled by a recordable midi mostion(similar to tim conrady's galaxy, only with drums).

it uses samples, so you can change the samples, or use the ones in it.

Each part has cutoff rez boost etc. so each drum channel is pretty amazing.

Also, it does have a granular effect,,....

It' sequencer is fun and very usefull. you program it by midi clicking different parts in a rectangluar window, it's time vs. drum channel as a graph, and when you click to program, it shows up as a square, clicking more increases volume, and some other stuff.

Also, I like to use SINE BEATS, It's deep I still haven't touched 75% of what it can do, I do alter parameters etc, but each part can be edited to more than I want lol.

The Kyma system can do all of the above. It's very expensive, but, aside from it's many unique synthesis algorithms, it has a functional timeline that you can compose with, it sends calls to different "ensembles" in reaktor terms, and also different synthesis algorithms.

The best thing about Kyma, ok it's awsome not one best thing, but a nice thing, with out delving into it's synthesis and TRUE additive resynthesis(which unfortunately is the only realtime resynthesis machine I know of, I dunno maybe some freek has written someting in cylcing 74, dunno), but reatime resynthesis with any number of midi controllers, can provide sounds that you DO NOT get anywhere else. it's awsome, and it's price about four thousand to start, but you really need two extra cards to actually do some serious editing of live audio resynthesis.

Also it has a sample morph in realtime where you can switch all aspects of sound from one sample to another.

It has recursive programming, so anything you do can be saved in multiple ways, and used as a new entire instrument when you boot it up again. It is the best NON analog hardware synth out there.

But Reakor will get you very far. Use a couple of beat boxes, and use the snapshot random merge function, It's amazing what reaktor can do in general, but there are wonderfull things to be done with a randomizer seed, that you can connect inside of any ensemble, couple that with the snapshot Fade from one preset to another, or the IMMEDIATE random merge of two presets,....

Your in business....

Hope that helped,....

In all honesty really the best way to get the drum programming aspect of Aphex style, is to make one template as I said, of small duration notes, and selectively delete portions as you copy and paste it. Just get an idea of how long you want your song to be, how many bars, what sounds you want, then past that one bar template into EVERY drum track, then selectively delete notes. Obviously you could then add any normal easy drum programming on top of it, a good Kick Snare on the first and third beat of every bar(I know disco, leave me alone lol), helps make it sound powerfull IMO, and gives in more cohesive flow. I started to play live again, and that's what I do, pre program things, but, assign alot of midi aspects to realtime controllers, low pass, ring mod, distortion, comb filtering sweeps complete the job.

Oh one more trick....

Program your entire song from scratch, at the LOWEST BPM your sequencer will allow, program it with like 1/64th notes, and make it fast at a low BPM, then up the tempo to 300bpm lol, it's a cheating way to get easy IDM APHEX drums, it works just as well as anything else I suggested, I find it enjoyable, and hehe know one knows.

So get on with it now man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-)

Post

for breakbeat manglers:

my fav glitch vst
- bram (smartelectronix) snippet2 // glitch mayhem

tkx noiselurker for the tips:
my opinion
- prefill pattern // no. copy/paste is more tedious
- limelite // no. its ok, nothing really special tho..
- Kyma // do you have one? I dont have. btw realtime resynthesis, not sure what TRUE should mean, would say: can be found quite in different hw (eg. hartmann neuron), and in software too of course (grain synth is a kind of resynthesis, some deLaMancha plugs do this, even a vocoder is a kind of resynthesis, or look for cameleon)...
- short notes // yeah. use it a lot. its crucial ur drumsynth/sampler reacts to midi gate (maybe 50% of drumsynths do)

Aphex RULEZZZZZZ
(not so much anymore tho...still he is my HERO, hehe)
