Hi, here's an eq plugin that I've been working on and thought I'd share:

http://www.mediafire.com/?sf4m7yj9l2z

Image

NCL EQ is a high quality 10 band eq.

Win vst.
64 bit internal precision.
Oversampling of the high bands.
10 filters.
Selectable filter types.

It is made with synthedit although the sound processing is done by custom modules coded in C++. Those of you that don't like synthedit plugs feel free to use a different eq plugin :P I'm hoping this can avoid turning into one of those synthedit sucks threads :scared:

This plugin is still in beta stage and there are lots of improvements and optimizations that I'm planning on making. Among other things cpu use is a little on the high side at the moment.

Also the gui uses a skin posted by ilboo2000 at the syntheditusers group. Graphics is not something I have much experience in. If any designers would like to contribute a skin for the cause please pm me.

I hope some of you will tack the time to take this for a test run and let me know what you think. Constructive criticism is usually welcome.

Cheers,

Matt.

Anyway... what do make of this pug, er, plug?

I've updated the beta:

Reduced cpu and memory usage.

Thanks for the free pog! I like to collect pogs and rare stamps.

Gonna check if I downloaded the lower cpu version, on my single core one synth+this eq was at 36% cpu, that's pushing it.

I like to set one low freq with low shelf and two high's with high pass I think it was, really brought things out. You should check out knobman and put a different background there, that way it'll be your creation.

Edit: The new version with the same synth took me down to 17%. No problems there.

Glad to hear it's getting into a more usable range. The next release should also slice off a bit more cpu use. What cpu and synth were you using?

Yeah, I agree this thing really needs a make over. I'm looking into it, so although there's no set time frame it's up there on the list :)

Beta 2 sounds less honky in the mid-range when using a peaking filter with a narrow 'Q', Dont know whether it has been changed but for some reason it sounded better? and i think you have done a decent job matt and it is a decent track/insert eq. The 'Q' went in the opposite way i am used too and the frequency sweep could maybe do with a less rapid sweep? but its a good use you ears EQ which is a good thing IMO as im so used to typing in my default boost and cut area's that work 9/10 but is a little lazy, so the NCL EQ MADE ME LISTEN a little more = good thing. I will post again when i have fiddled more as this post is based on around 30 minutes of use so its hardly in-depth, But first impressions are important to some so :tu: keep up the good work friend ;)

Yeah, I might swap that around as well as the way it scales. Of course this'll mean having to rework the q in any old projects. As for frequency it scales roughly in octaves per unit on the control. If it's sweeping to rapidly, then perhaps a bigger knob might help - on the eq that is - or perhaps limiting the range of each band so you get more resolution.

Funny what you said about having to use your ears. I'm also going through a mini-revelation. I really am used to using my eyes to eq which is surly some kind of paradox

I'm glad that your initial impressions are positive and with any luck this plugin's still got some improvements to come.

Cheers,

Matt.

(right thats it I'm off to bed its past midnight over here)

cheers for opening my eyes too matt, its offered me back the clarity i get when i listen to some of my fave music with some real nice open back headphones on with my eyes closed, relaxing but concentrating 100% on the sound if you know what i mean. Take care matt and cheers mate :)

This is awesome, you really nailed the lowshelf. Ran fine on my single core with tons of plugins loaded and the cpu handled it.

I don't think any of us actually care about the gui, I mean who stares at the screen while you're recording or playing.

@ RunBeerRun very good point, i didnt even notice/think about the GUI: which is a good thing IMO because my eyes get tired of precise read outs/hardware clone GUI's. I mean there is a time and a place for precision (EG: i love Equim by elemental audio systems/RND, also i love the Waves Studio Classics Collection & it fully calls for/deserves the GUI's).But as i have already said: its just a refreshing back to basics but decent sounding and unrestrictive EQ and tis just what the virtual doctor ordered. Another + for the list

Good call RunBeeRun fine sir

Ok, there's a new beta up. This should further reduce cpu use. The next updates will probably be focused on functionality and eventually a new skin.

Thanks again Necro and Beer. Your support and feedback is very much appreciated :)
