Google for knobman. There are discussions on this forum about it. I have used it in combination with RealDraw to create some good looking bitmaps.
Most of the graphics utilize PhotoShop or similar other use 3D applications such as MAX or Blender but the knobs you wish to create should be quite possible using the above.

There are two version of this already in the KnobMan show-off thread. One by Leslie Sanford and one by Hlis. They both look great, Hlis looks a little more "realistic" except for the fact that he made an octagonal nut which is not something that exists so it gives it a bit of an odd flavor.

Requires some editing for that. Split the image into 2 frames and the import them into knobman. Use the frame masks to create your sequence. From there you should be able to apply whatever method has been working for you. Gimp should be able to do this if you don't have PHS, its just a .png so will not have problems with the alpha layer but you will need to select 'use alpha layer' under transparency in Knobman.
I sent it to you loaded into Knobman. I thought I should explain what I did here.

i'll try.. but i mind that without having the image (without shadow) and the shadow splitted in 2 different files i'll not able to load it correctly on max..
some on this forum told me to drow the shadow on the pannel used in my software and using the image without shadows..
btw, i'll try.. really tks a lot! =)
