Hey Guys,
Now I realize this is a bit of a hacky question but does anyone know of VSTs that can produce a similar sound to Pheonix's song 1901? During the first 10 seconds of the song when the synth is playing with a tad of percussion and delayed guitars, it sounds more powerful then anything my little collection of VSTs can produce. I currently use Nexus and Vanguard, which rely heavily on delay and reverb and when these effects are taken away the synths began to sound "cheap" and less full, and trying to compress the hell out of them doesn't seem to give me the 1901 sound either. So, does anyone know of any synths that come fairly close to this sound out of the box or can come close with a bit of tweaking? Thanks alot for any input you have.

Sounds like distorted FM to me. As usual, FX play a big part of a sound. Youd need something like FM8 or one of the free versions plus a warm type of distortion and some compression. FM Heaven would give you an idea :

There are also some free distortion plugs :

Not sure either.. I know they use a Yamaha CS80 though..
Check FM http://www.futuremusic.co.uk/ at the bottom of the page theres an interview with Philippe Zdar who produced that album..
And theres also a photo on http://wearephoenix.com/journal/?p=170 which shows a few synths.. one being the CS80, one looks kind of like a Korg Trident, and two smaller synths (Korg?)

The top one is an Yamaha DX 100 (FM-synth), the little silver one looks like a MIDI keyboard of some sort and the bottom one does indeed look like a Korg Trident.
