Hello!

I found an amazing sound in a Halloween music and I thought I wanted to make something like that.

Do you recall that strange frightening pads where the pitch goes up faster and faster until the sound ends? I think they're used in horror movies (but I don't see much of them XD), to create an atmosphere of fear, i think... I also think they're called "drones", but this one is a bit different...

In that particular track, its a string crescendo, not a pad.

I totally agree, it's a string crescendo. I didn't remember that... XD
It's very hard to me to control the pitch of the sounds, I can just control the pitch of the events, the notes.

Can you give me a hand on that?

Perhaps, though I'm not quite following what you said. You can't control the pitch of the "sounds" but you can control the pitch of the "notes"?

for a really good string crescendo you need to pay extra attention to programming MIDI - unfortunately I have f**k all classical training myself so I can't give you any details but I'll just say my mantra instead: trial and error.

Also, go for results, not technique.

Maybe you can find a MIDI file of a crescendo somewhere.

This particular sound he's trying to achieve is a more modern cinematic technique as opposed to a classical one. The use of dissonant notes will be key. I could help a little, maybe give a basic starting point...beyond that he'll have to try a few things to get it exactly as he wants it (the trial and error you mentioned).

tomasab, what are you currently using to attempt to get this sound?

Yes, I allways "trial and error", allways.
Currently I'm not doing this anyway, because I don't know where to start.

For example, I could start with a string synth, make a crescendo with the notes (I don't need a MIDI for that, Bonteburg) and then... It would get stupid.
That would be the first thing coming to my head.

Then I would try to add more notes, in different tones, or change the tone of a 2nd oscillator to make it "scary" and less playable.

Unfortunately I'm a bit limited to synths, because I often use playable sounds in my music. I try to do everything with synths... I'm attempting to change that.
